impact upon both his personal and political lives, constituting a fundamental 'turning
point' in his maturation as a person and political leader. Drawing upon archival research,
this paper aims to reconstruct key moments in the dialogue between Gramsci,
the Bolshevik leadership and the wider experiences of the Russian Revolution in 1922-
3. It focuses in particular upon the importance of this period for the emergence of a
distinctive notion of hegemony as a central dimension of Gramsci's political thought
and practice. While Gramsci's earlier writings tended to utilise a received meaning of
hegemony as a form of political power, the 'svolta di Mosca' produced a greater emphasis
upon hegemony as a concrete 'method of political work'. It was in Moscow in
1922-3 that Gramsci discovered the concrete forms of what he had earlier called the
'vivifying thought' 'immanent' to both Das Kapital and the Russian Revolution. His distinctive
elaboration of the notion of hegemony in subsequent years represents a concentration
and critical elaboration of these intense experiences.
quella esperienza così intensa., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Gramsciana], relazioni_identificativo=[], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[3], relazioni_numero_issue=[], relazioni_start=[], relazioni_end=[], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[2016], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20160101-20161231], relazioni_tipo_data=[], relazioni_luogo=[Modena], relazioni_editore=[Mucchi], relazioni_paese=[IT], soggettivoc=[Rivoluzione permanente, Giacobinismo, Egemonia], subjectvoc=[Revolution, Jacobinism, Hegemony], note_riservate=, source=, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0021307, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=, dateIssued=20160101-20161231}]

reference to ancient history (notably, the Greek and the Etruscan history), and to contemporary
history (Prussian Hegemony, Piedmontese hegemony). In Italy the same notion
was also widely used in the analysis of the "language question". The language
question has been until now erroneously regarded as the origin of Antonio Gramsci's
use of the hegemony notion within the other parts of his thought, especially with reference
to the process of formation and stabilization of a modern State. For Gramsci, in
fact, the culmination of the hegemonic process coincides with the realization of a "armoured
consensus of coercion", that is to say a tightly organized set of more or less
complex civil institutions, mentalities, languages, cultures, behaviours (including the
unconscious ones), habits, but also of single (intellectual) personalities who operate
either individually or in different sort of groups. Such process may or may not imply the
development of social subjectivities, who may play either a passive or active part within
the process. The process itself is neither univocal nor unidirectional, it is made of many
and different stages, all continuously characterized by conflict between different options.
Here the idea originates that "the starting point of the whole philosophy of praxis"
is the "fixation of the 'cathartic' moment", i.e. the elaboration of the structure in the
superstructure, which is the preliminary passage from necessity to freedom, where the
former is connected to the (more or less complete) unconsciousness on the part of social
agents of the true mechanism generating their actions and their will; while freedom
implies intellectual command of the objective conditions in which they operate,
which constitutes the first step for their modification and change. The notion of Catharsis
is thus crucial, and it will be examined also with reference to the psychology of
the time in which Gramsci was elaborating his thought.
all'opera di Antonio Gramsci - erroneamente all'origine dell'uso che questi ne
dell'epoca in cui Gramsci operava., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Gramsciana], relazioni_identificativo=[], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[3], relazioni_numero_issue=[], relazioni_start=[], relazioni_end=[], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[2016], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20160101-20161231], relazioni_tipo_data=[], relazioni_luogo=[Modena], relazioni_editore=[Mucchi], relazioni_paese=[IT], soggettivoc=[Coscienza, Psicologia, Filosofia Della Praxis, Egemonia], subjectvoc=[Consciousness, Psychology, Philosophy of praxis, Hegemony], note_riservate=, source=, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0021308, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=, dateIssued=20160101-20161231}]

Can the French philosopher's theories be considered cultural progress or rather than a
cultural recession, as far as the emancipation processes are concerned? The following
article analyzes, in a comparative way, the main categories of both intellectuals.
The biggest difference is not only in the way to change reality, but also in the idea of reality
itself. If in Gramsci, we can see an effort to think in a dialectical way, Foucault judgment
is characterized by a pre-dialectic way of thinking the world and its structures.
Foucault's thought doesn't agree with the arising of ideas that appeared after October's
revolution. It is, actually, the opposite. In fact categories like "imperialism", "capitalism",
"class struggle" vanish in his view. In conclusion, unlike Gramsci, Michel Foucault's
theories seem to be much more similar to those of liberalism or conservative
revolution then to those of Marxism.

These occasional and apparently random remarks we find scattered throughout the Prison Notebooks are used by Gramsci to refine the concepts of power and hegemony, which they help to formalize. For Gramsci, hegemony is in fact an "educational relation". These remarks enable us to identify certain ambiguities prefiguring those involved in the theories of symbolic domination, and which the critical sociology of education will make great use of. However the remarks also open up other potential paths leading into the heart of the philosophy of praxis, with its focus on the necessary and possible development of a "collective name", intimately associated with the development of a "singular noun". If we avoid the temptation to distort it by granting it a mythical status, the project of the "scuola unitaria" retains its relevance today, insofar as it makes the case for certain potentialities which, till now, have scarcely been actualised through the historical deployment of schooling., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Actuel Marx], relazioni_identificativo=[], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[1], relazioni_numero_issue=[57], relazioni_start=[43], relazioni_end=[61], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[October 2015], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20151001-20151031], relazioni_tipo_data=[], relazioni_luogo=[Parigi], relazioni_editore=[PUF], relazioni_paese=[FR], soggettivoc=[Educazione (Pedagogia), Scuola unitaria, Egemonia, Filosofia della Praxis], subjectvoc=[Education, Unitary School, Hegemony, Philosophy of Praxis], note_riservate=, source=Cairn.info, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0020190, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20151001-20151031}]

Arrested and imprisoned by the Italian Fascist regime for his socialist activities in 1926, in the solitary and debilitating conditions of Mussolini's jail he penned one of the most startling works of social and political theory - the Prison Notebooks (1929-1935) - that continues to challenge, intrigue and inspire its readers to this day. This book brings together some of the world's leading scholars on Gramsci to provide an engaging and accessible account of the main ideas, themes and debates in his writings, and to critically explore their relevance for contemporary social and political theory. Among the key themes examined in the book are Gramsci's very influential accounts of state formation, hegemony and ideology, which are explored in relation to contemporary Marxism, the liberal tradition, democratic theory, subaltern studies and post-Marxism., table_contents=Introduction: The Life of a Reflective Revolutionary

Such scholars have combined Gramsci's reflections of hegemony, with more recent developments in critical theory (such as structural Marxism, genealogy and psychoanalysis) to engage in a wider deconstruction of the Marxist tradition, thereby laying the basis for a distinctive approach to the analysis of ideology and politics.3 The goal of the chapter is to explore the way Laclau and Mouffe's ideas about hegemony, subjectivity and power can supplement other neo-Gramscian accounts of the state, ideology and international political economy. But it also seeks to provide a way of operationalizing these abstract concepts and logics so as to develop critical explanations of problematized phenomena in the national and international context., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[McNally, Mark, Antonio Gramsci], relazioni_identificativo=[IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0020201], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[], relazioni_numero_issue=[], relazioni_start=[195], relazioni_end=[213], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[2015], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20150101-20151231], relazioni_tipo_data=[], relazioni_luogo=[], relazioni_editore=[], relazioni_paese=[], soggettivoc=[Egemonia, Postmarxismo], subjectvoc=[Hegemony, Postmarxism], note_riservate=, source=http://www.palgrave.com, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0020214, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20150101-20151231}]

From the struggles of the urban poor in Gujarat to the activism of sexual subalterns in eastern India and the mobilization of artisanal fishing communities in Tamil Nadu, the essays in this volume cover a diverse range of ongoing struggles against dispossession, disenfranchisement, and stigma that are unfolding in neoliberal India.
The volume analyses the forms of collective agency that subaltern groups develop to negotiate with the workings of power from above. Foregrounding the imaginative, affective, and secular dimensions of subaltern agency, New Subaltern Politics interrogates the current relevance of Gramscian concepts of hegemony, subalternity, and the integral state in the contemporary Indian context. Bringing together path-breaking methodological and conceptual interventions in the study of subaltern politics, this volume will be invaluable to all those engagedaas academics or as activists--in the struggle against unjust societies and unequal developmental trajectories., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=FIG: G. 878, soggettivoc=[India, Egemonia], subjectvoc=[India, Hegemony], note_riservate=ISBN - 9780199457557, source=, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0020375, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20150101-20151231}]

Drawing on contemporary research on immigration policy and on immigrant mobilizations, as well as the political philosophy of Antonio Gramsci (in particular, the concept of hegemony), it is possible to understand the U.S. immigration regime as an unstable but functional synthesis of partially contradictory political demands formulated by economic and political elites, determined opponents of mass immigration and by immigrants themselves. Unequally satisfactory to these different parties, such a synthesis nonetheless favors their consent to a common policy, which maintains a large immigrant population with limited rights but who are disposed to wait. Any analysis of the sectors of civil society and social movements with a concern for immigrants must take into account this complex functioning, from which it is difficult to escape and to which it is difficult to contribute. Serious crises and transformations, deeply affecting the international system, create a conducive environment in which theoretical perspectives feel an urge to review themselves against the dynamics of the new conjuncture. One of the first steps that can be taken to satisfy this urge is to revievaluate the main tenents of the theories by taking their evolution processes into consideration. The aim of this study is to contribute to the intellectual efforts in this direction by focusing on one of the core concepts of Neo-Gramscian studies: "hegemony", that has a central place in the Critical Theory of Robert Cox. Throughout the article, Coxian "hegemony" and the ruling logic behind it will be examined in comparison with the works of Antonio Gramsci, who laid the intellectual grounds of the concept. The first section is devoted to Gramsci's and Cox's positions vis-a-vis positivism, their historicist epistemology, the balance that they have created between historical structures and the limits of human action as well as the place they opened for culture, intersubjective meanings and collective images in their theories. In the following sections, both authors' understandings of hegemony within the local and global contexts will also be examined.
