After the Second World War his thought became increasingly influential, and remained relevant throughout the second half of the century. Today, it is generally agreed that his Marxism has highly original and personal features, as confirmed by the fact that his international influence has continued to grow since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Gramsci and Languages offers an explanation of this originality and traces the origins of certain specific features of Gramsci's political thought by looking at his lifelong interest in language, especially in questions of linguistic diversity and unification., table_contents=IntroductionLinguistic reflections as an integral part of Gramsci's legacy Modern linguistics and the philosophy of praxisTowards a better understanding of Gramsci's views1. Gramsci's historicism is spatial: his geographically nuanced analysis of social relations and political projects emerged out of the same method that yielded his historically differentiated insights. After an opening discussion of Gramsci's historicism and the role of space therein, the chapter concentrates on Gramsci's treatment of the relationship between city and countryside. Gramsci's discussion of city and countryside allows to establish most clearly the difference between his historicism and diffusionist treatments of urbanization in modernization theory. In today's urbanizing world, considerations of spatial organization are vital not only for the prospects of hegemony, but also for the future of the planet. For this purpose, Gramsci's emphasis on hegemony as a project to transform, not magnify, spatial divides (rural, urban, or otherwise) is more crucial than ever., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Ekers, Michael, Gramsci: Space, Nature, Politics], relazioni_identificativo=[IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0020042], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[], relazioni_numero_issue=[], relazioni_start=[83], relazioni_end=[103], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[2013], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20130101-20131231], relazioni_tipo_data=[], relazioni_luogo=[Oxford], relazioni_editore=[Wiley-Blackwell], relazioni_paese=[GB], soggettivoc=[storicismo, egemonia], subjectvoc=[Historism, Hegemony], note_riservate=, source=IGS-Int_2013, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0020047, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20130101-20131231}]

When Gramsci does refer to nature and to the natural, his statements are theoretically interesting and politically important, not only because of what they say about nature, but also because of what they say about his concepts of hegemony and of politics. Implicit in Gramsci's conception of politics - central to which is the notion of hegemony - is a particular understanding of the natural and the material, nonhuman world. It is possible to discern in Gramsci's writings five major strands or ideas regarding nature and the natural. Using the Gramscian concept of hegemony, this paper examines the strategies deployed by subaltern groups in three Arab countries with comparable sociopolitical conditions: namely, Egypt, Syria, and Algeria. It contends that Egyptian protesters were successful in toppling their president because they were facing a weak hegemony while in Algeria people were unable to threaten the regime seriously since they confronted a strong hegemonic bloc. Furthermore, on a continuum from the most to the least hegemonic, the Syrian regime is situated midway between the two. The Syrian elite were not strong enough to implement a passive revolution comparable to the Algerian one, but they had sufficient cohesion to prevent a quick fragmentation similar to the one that the Egyptian ruling class experienced., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[, ], relazioni_identificativo=[, ], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[, ], relazioni_numero_volume=[, ], relazioni_numero_issue=[, ], relazioni_start=[, ], relazioni_end=[, ], relazioni_pagine=[, ], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[, ], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20170101-20171231, 20130101-20131231], relazioni_tipo_data=[, ], relazioni_luogo=[, ], relazioni_editore=[, ], relazioni_paese=[, ], soggettivoc=[Egemonia, Rivoluzione], subjectvoc=[Hegemony, Revolution], note_riservate=, source=, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0020887, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=, dateIssued=20130101-20131231}]

The purpose of this article is to revise the Gramscian contributions about capitalist society, with an emphasis on his reflections about the State and power. It first situates the foundational socio-historic elements of the author's analysis, inscribed in the particular scenario of the transition from competitive capitalism to the state of monopoly capitalism. It revives the theoretical- analytical bases of Gramsci's thinking, based on the unique contributions of the writings of Marx and Engels to the formulation of the concept of the expanded State. It defends the current relevance of Gramsci's thinking to the revelation of the capitalist ethos, principally by the analysis of the contemporary strategies of recomposition of the bourgeois hegemony.

Comparative analysis, I argue, calls for a concept of domination that is more contingent than Bourdieu's symbolic domination, yet deeper than Gramsci's hegemony., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Sociology], relazioni_identificativo=[], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[46], relazioni_numero_issue=[2], relazioni_start=[187], relazioni_end=[206], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[April-May, 2012], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20120400-20120500], relazioni_tipo_data=[inferred], relazioni_luogo=[], relazioni_editore=[Sage Publications], relazioni_paese=[GB], soggettivoc=[Bourdieu, Pierre, Consenso, Egemonia, Dominazione], subjectvoc=[Bourdieu, Pierre, consent, Hegemony, Domination], note_riservate=, source=IGS-2012, recordInfo=francescogiasi@libero.it, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0019372, recordOrigin=MODS.2CB3365FF9F6AA0, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20120400-20120500}]

A.G. 421, soggettivoc=[Stato, Società Civile, Egemonia, Intellettuali, Machiavelli, Niccolò, Sessualità, Subaltern Studies], subjectvoc=[State, Civil society, Hegemony, Intellectuals, Machiavelli, Niccolò, Sexuality, Subaltern Studies], note_riservate=, source=, recordInfo=francescogiasi@libero.it, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0018866, recordOrigin=MODS.2CAD3DD7D7438BE, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20120101-20121231}]
