Laski's political thought helps reveal weaknesses in the Idealism of Green and Bosanquet, who did not pay sufficient attention to divisions within society. Social unity, state sovereignty and the general will are among the concepts upon which Laski focused. The strength of Laski's criticism can be enhanced by drawing upon Gramsci's influential political thought. Laski and Gramsci were concerned with similar processes in the politics of capitalist countries. The aim of this paper is to convey the relevance of a Gramscian perspective in medical anthropology, stressing his anti-essentialist way of reasoning about 'nature'. The author claims that Gramsci's understandings of the bodily life of the state can deconstruct naturalized realities in ways that are helpful for the ethnographer engaged in the political anthropology of embodiment and the management of health, persons, and life itself. The paper is presented in three parts. An attempt is made, first, to frame the relevance of Gramsci for Italian medical anthropology and second, to explore the components of the Gramscian concept of 'second nature' within the perspective that he himself calls 'an anthropology'. Third, an example is given of how the proposed Gramscian insights could inform an ethnography on the biopolitical aspects for the early detection of Alzheimer's disease, which is currently being carried out in Perugia. This classic text continues to inform scholarship in the field. While Ideology has received considerable attention, less explored is Apple's scholarship that precedes Ideology. Structured by a chronological reading of articles republished in Ideology, this historical essay sheds new light on Apple's initial formulation of a critical approach to education. In particular, the essay reveals a significant shift in Apple's Marxist influences, from the work of Alvin Gouldner, Trent Schroyer, and Jürgen Habermas in the first half of the 1970s to work in the British New Sociology of Education (NSE) and the ideas of Antonio Gramsci in the second half. In his classic study "Americanism and Fordism", written in 1934, Antonio Gramsci dedicated himself to analyzing the influence of Taylorism/Fordism on American society's social and cultural development, especially transformations operated in the political culture of the factory labourer. Revealing in Taylorism/Fordism capitalism's ample ideological strategy, Gramsci perceived in this system more than a simple set of methods of organizing and managing labour activities. It was, above all, a set of principles that persuaded and coerced labourers in their actions beyond the companies' space, conforming them within ideas and a lifestyle perfectly adequate to the necessities of the emerging mass industrialization. In this effort, Gramsci attained significant clarity regarding the magnitude of the influence of the social structure, of the State and of the class struggle over the development of the productive forces, mainly in regards to the management of labour, demonstrating the dialectic character of these spheres. Our goal in this work, is to resume points of this Gramscian reading of Taylorism/Fordism, observing the scope and depth of his arguments.

This paper tries to sketch the continuity between the topics of government and subjectification and that of discipline and bodies in Foucault's work by assessing the pervasiveness and the importance of the two poles of what Foucault himself, in a Kantian fashion, called a critique of political reason: individualization and totalization. In the first place, I will sketch the mode of functioning of "government" with reference to the pastorate invented by the Christian Church, showing that the theme of government and of its historical origins appears for the first time when Foucault talks about the disciplinary powers of normalization of 19th-century psychiatry. In the second place, I will approach directly the logic of strategy that makes intelligible the relationships between government and discipline. Finally, these two concepts will be included in what Foucault called the double modern political rationality, and the persistence of this topic, in different forms, in many of his historico-philosophical analyses, and above all as the two sides of what he famously called bio-power. The main claim is that the relationship between the concepts of governmentality (the effect of which is totalization) and discipline (the effect of which is individualization) is neither one of conceptual incompatibility nor one of chronological succession in the development of Foucault's thought, but rather a relation of interdependence that needs to be pointed out and further articulated in order to understand and pursue a critique of modern political reason.

In this article are defended the possibility and the necessity of the teaching of the reception of art works in school education. Firstly, some relations between art and the development of both the human species and the individual are analysed in Georg Lukács and Lev Vygotsky's works. In order to put in question the old assumption that opposes education and instruction, the discussion made by Gramsci on the grammatical teaching of Latin and Greek in the traditional school education is explored. In the article is concluded its path analysing the intentional and systematic formation of the reception of art works provided by school education based on Aleksei N. Leontiev's works on the appropriation process of culture by the individual.

From its origin, the field of the alternative communication for the social change has tended to incorporate the legacy of Latin American and MediterraneanEurope reflections and practical experiences adopting a limited and reductionist perspective. Within this context, the tensions between knowledge and geopolitics become an object of outmost importance, since they indicate the possibilities and limitations for the building of a critical communication theory aiming at a fair appreciation of the local idiosyncrasies in which theoretical contributions and concepts are born. The following lines aim at reviewing and comparing the legacy of Paulo Freire and Antonio Gramsci as promoters of a complex and dialectic view of alternative communication and its interactions with massive and popular culture.

The article argues that the current financial crisis that began unfolding in late 2007 cannot be explained merely by institutional failure, false economic theories, or human misbehavior. Instead, the crisis must be analyzed against the backdrop of the internal contradictions of capitalist accumulation and the gradual disintegration of the post-war hegemonic world order under U.S. leadership. The specifics of the crisis are inherently related to the failure of Fordism in the 1970s and the emergence of a post-Fordist, neoliberal, and finance-driven regime of accumulation that was pushed to its limits in the lead-up to the current downturn.

The basic premise of this paper is that the problem in the agency-social structure or subject-social structure relationship is crucial for understanding the present stage of takeoff in the new phase of development or capitalism of knowledge following the recent global crisis of 2007-2009. This expresses the contradiction between neoliberalism, as a political-ideological projection, and a new technological-productive base, as well as the question of differentiation between developed "successful" countries and those that are "backward". Institutionalism and Gramsci's Marxism have offered solutions to the agency-structure dichotomy through very different theoretical approaches, the first seeking to explain the issue of differentiation between countries. This study approaches how the so-called "citizen revolution" process, which appears as a third route facing the classic conflict between neoliberalism and popular sectors in resistance, has established a political consensus among emerging capital sectors and a variety of popular sectors, ranging from the lower middle class to the sub-proletariat. The populist dialectic of President Rafael Correa combines with a discourse of technical progress, competence and professionalization based on a "supposed" modern capitalism that gives form to the new post-neoliberal order implemented in Ecuador. It immerses society in imaginaries of progressive change. The principal beneficiaries of this process are the large economic groups of the country at the same time that an aggressive strategy of criminalization is developed for all social protest carried out in the sphere of transforming social and leftist movements.

This paper presents an interpretation of Gramsci's conception of philosophy and education, as well as the articulation of such concepts in practice and in his theoretical-methodological paradigm. Texts produced mainly in Gramsci's theoretical- methodological maturity were used such as the Prison notebooks, as well as the writings of some of his reviewers who have strong impact in Brazil. The text is divided into two parts: the first discusses the Gramscian conception of philosophy while the second focuses on his conception of education. In the conclusion, the focus is on central issues which must be taken into account in order to develop a good interpretation of the philosophical and pedagogical-educational legacy originated in Gramsci's thoughts and actions, once he faced the contradictions of the Italian reality of his time in an attempt to cooperate with the overcoming of capitalist social relations.

This article does not try to "rethink" the theory of Antonio Gramsci to redefine his concepts and give some examples of them to match theory with reality, as does the pseudo-science. On the contrary, I want "unthinking" to put his theory trial to see the validity of the concepts, making a critical reflection in order to bring something new to a work that has been widely studied by critics and commentators, and respond where the validity of classical thinking to analyze contemporary phenomena is.

The great British miners' strike of 1984-1985 began 30 years ago. This personal reflection centres on the debate over trade union strategy during the strike. The Communist Party of Great Britain (CP) had long been an important influence in the leadership of the National Union of Mineworkers, but the strike also coincided with and exacerbated divisions within the CP and the wider left about how to respond to the ‘New Right' Thatcher Conservative Government. This article focuses on the distinctive Eurocommunist analysis of the journal Marxism Today. The political atmosphere of the time is recalled, and then the Gramscian industrial relations strategy of winning the political argument through a ‘broad democratic alliance' is reconstructed. Arguably, this ‘social movement' approach could have produced a better outcome to the strike, while it provides lasting lessons about the limitations of a narrowly economistic view of trade union power.

Based on the study of Notebook 25, this text analyses the similarities and differences between the meaning that Gramsci gives to the "subaltern social groups" and the configuration of popular movements in Brazil and Latin America in these last decades. In its attempt to pursue an elusive Modernist vision of development, the Chávez government (1999-2013) in Venezuela concocted a fresh and very binary roster of "us" versus "them." In its counter-hegemonic project, in Gramscian terms, Venezuela has promoted a subaltern Orientalism that has featured the demonization of the United States and its closest allies, and a rather abrupt bonding with countries and associated cultures with which it had little previous contact, as exemplified by the cases of China, Iran and Russia. Edward Said (1978) defined Orientalism as a concept with reference to imperialist powers vis-à-vis developing countries. However, in the case at hand, one observes a refreshing twist: here one observes Orientalism on the part of developing and non-Western nations in relation to a counterhegemonic struggle vis-à-vis dominant Western countries, or what I term Sub-altern Orientalism. The article shall address this incipient phase of identity construction in Venezuela regarding the Chinese, Arab, and to a lesser extent, Russian presence.

Historicist and political reflection of Freire, gives us a deep look promising in the world. His conviction that oppressor and oppressed can liberate each other and together build a more just and equal, is embodied in education as an emancipatory praxis, which must be built into a dialogic relationship between teacher and learner. Paulo Freire's postulates it has influence of diverse intellectu al currents and in this tour, we find a permanent invocation to Antonio Gramsci's contributions.

This paper intends to conduct a search on some theoretical concepts of Gramscian theory in order to scrutinize their relevance to the Community Communication. Beginning with the concepts of expanded state theory and civil society we discuss the centrality of culture and the ideological diffusion mechanisms for the maintenance of power in capitalist societies. By addressing Gramscian topics such as cathartic moment and must-be we seek to emphasize the political aspect - in its broad sense - and we focus on community media as a propitious environment for the occurrence of the cathartic process. Finally, we propose counter-hegemonic media as a relevant expression to characterize the so-called community media. We emphasize that this is a terminological approach with the aim to contribute to a political and open and less restrictive analysis of these eminent private apparatuses of counter-hegemony.
