Aim of the present essay is to track different epochs of hegemony in the history of the modern State. In the first chapter, a very peculiar although rarely studied aspect of Gramsci's method is retrieved, i.e. the semantic expansion of all the terms denoting functions involved in the concrete working of hegemony. It will be shown that this expansion is necessary to understand the role played by the public « organisational » and « connective » functions taking place within the private sphere of the « civil society ». The second chapter introduces two (not entirely distinguishable) main phases of hegemony, represented, respectively, by the predominance of « mobilisation » and of « control ». The consequence of the trend from the first to the second phase is the gradual weakening of the separation between « public » and « private ». With regard to the government of the subaltern classes, this trend means that « control » becomes more important in relation to « mobilisation », and bourgeois power is pushed towards the experimentation of new forms of proximity - not merely repressive but ideological - to the masses of the subalterns. The Gramscian notion of hegemony is employed by contemporary linguistic anthropology and cultural studies. A parallelism between the description of the « hegemony apparatus » and the « centres of irradiation of linguistic innovations » can actually be observed in the Prison Notebooks. This fact is the result of two different issues discussed in the leading group of the Bolshevik party during the 1920s: the debate on the hegemony (i.e. the relationship between the working class and the countrymen) that followed the Lenin death, and the linguistic planning of the revolutionary state. Gramsci elaborated these two lines of thinking and connected them in an original way within the Notebooks 10 and 11. In such a theoretical development, he uses not only notions on language learned during his university studies on linguistics, but also notions of the « Völkerpsychology » diffused by Antonio Labriola, the founder of the Italian Marxism.

The article analyses how the concept of « subaltern » emerges and evolves through the whole corpus of writings by Antonio Gramsci. The starting point are the articles edited before the capture, thus we will follow the use of the term in The Prison Notebooks. The term « subaltern » is initially used to name the intermediate levels within a hierarchy, and it is later adopted to define either the most marginalized social groups, or the one among the main classes which is not yet dominant. In parallel with the reflection leading to the transcribed notes of Notebook 25, in his letters Gramsci uses the term « subaltern » to refer to a single person subjected to cultural and psychological domination. While emphasizing the Marxist origins of this way of thinking, the articles argues that the couple dominant/subaltern gives Gramsci the possibility to introduce categories broader than the traditional ones (bourgeoisie/proletariat) in connecting subjectivity, social status, structural, cultural and ideological variables. The archaeology of the concept in the writings of Gramsci gives the possibility to better understand the origins of a concept that social sciences often use today in referring to the social individuals « at the margins of history ».

This article describes the first receptions and uses of Gramscian theories in anthropology, between 1948 and 1960, in Italy, France and Great Britain. At that moment, Gramsci's reflections on subalternity and the political dimension of popular culture inspired those anthropologists interested both in the regeneration of civil and cultural life in post-war Italy and the decolonisation of the peoples of the Third world. References to Gramsci were sometimes improvised from a philological point of view and often remained at the stage of intuition. Nevertheless, they disclosed a sort of tendency in anthropology - and also in social history - for thinking comparatively different spatialities and temporalities of « subalternity », between Italian South and World South. Stemming from the « politicised » conception of subaltern groups offered by Gramsci, the article describes the reception of his thinking in Italian anthropology and its uses by international anthropology interested in Third world peoples, addressing both the convergences and the « missed encounters » with some anthropological traditions such as in France.

This contribution investigates the presence in Gramsci's work of the family of terms relating to "subaltern", with particular attention being paid to the prison writings. The term itself, of military origin, was widespread in political and journalistic reflections before the First World War; there are numerous very well-known examples of its use in Gramsci, first as an adjective, and then as a noun. It designates both the most marginal classes and the bloc of forces grouped around the "fundamental" revolutionary class, namely the working class, which at least potentially struggles for hegemony. The semantic ambivalence is not without its problems, but this probably lies at the base of the term's current popularity. In Gramsci, moreover, the term (or family of terms) undergoes further expansions in meaning, passing on to designate - during his ongoing prison reflections - not only classes and social groups, but also individuals and the characteristics of their being in relation to others. And in including ever more cultural and not just social or socio-cultural characteristics, it almost always has a clearly negative meaning when compared with the positive "hegemonic" pole.

For reasons both internal and external to Gramscian studies, research into the subject of hegemony has over the last few years acquired a renewed importance, as new and ever more actual aspects of Gramsci's reflections have been brought to light. Within this still to be fully explored framework, I believe it is of importance to pause over one aspect that has been as much overlooked by scholars as it is, in my view, central: this is the relation between hegemony and Caesarism. Although it is condensed into just a few prison notes (but present in an embryonic form in the pre-prison writings), the analysis of this phenomenon represents an important element in Gramsci's investigations, allowing him to grasp the essence of the radical transformations characterizing the political scene at the turn of the twentieth century. The intention of my essay is to offer a general, but at the same time in-depth, treatment of the question, by shedding light on the complex constellation of concepts implied by the category of Caesarism (organic crisis, passive revolution, conception of the world, party) and on the historico-political framework lying behind it (modernity in all its complexity)

This issue of «Laboratoire italien» reports on the current state of the research on Gramsci in Italy. From the point of view of their subject matter, the contributions collected in this issue can be divided into two main areas, which ultimately feed on each other: the editions, on the one hand, and on the other, the critical studies. The first section hosts contributions on the new editions, framed in the project - started in 1990 and still in progress - of the the Edizione nazionale degli scritti di Antonio Gramsci. In particular, it gathers essays on the new editions of the Prison Notebooks, the Writings 1910-1926 and the Correspondence. These articles give an account of the innovations - both in the method and content - that these new editions have produced. The section opens with an extensive essay by Gianni Francioni who studies the way Gramsci worked through the manuscript of the Notebooks, revealing its structure and diachronic features in the light of the latest philological findings. The second section collects studies on certain issues and concepts previously neglected, and that in the last two decades are emerging as crucial: pragmatism, linguistics, the interpretation of fascism, of corporatism and post-liberal societies, the category of "translatability", the relationship with Vico's philosophy. The issue is concluded (third section) by Giuseppe Vacca with a comprehensive overview of the most significant interpretations of Gramsci in Italy in recent years.

Il numero di «Laboratoire italien» che qui si presenta costituisce un contributo in un momento nel quale alcuni segnali concreti di un ritorno di interesse per il pensiero di Gramsci nella cultura francese iniziano a manifestarsi. Questo fascicolo, in concreto, aspira a essere una mediazione per il pubblico francese delle acquisizioni alle quali la ricerca italiana su Gramsci è giunta negli ultimi venticinque anni, e di cui si è ampiamente parlato nelle pagine precedenti. Con questo obbiettivo in mente, abbiamo individuato tre assi lungo i quali selezionare i nostri interlocutori e costruire un indice. Nella prima sezione - «Philologie» - abbiamo raccolto una documentazione pressoché completa e aggiornata sullo stato di avanzamento dell'Edizione nazionale; nella seconda sezione - « Outils » - il lettore troverà alcuni contributi su temi e aspetti del pensiero di Gramsci, riletti alla luce delle acquisizioni di merito e di metodo più recenti; la terza sezione - « Bilan » - ospita infine un'ampia panoramica complessiva di Giuseppe Vacca, che fa il punto sulle più significative interpretazioni di Gramsci prodottesi in Italia negli ultimi anni.

After having traced the publishing history of the Notebooks, from their first edition in thematic form to the new critical edition presently being completed, the essay then deals with the peculiarities of Gramsci's prison writing, a full understanding of which is necessary in order to capture the author's "rhythm of thought". Some of these peculiarities - starting with the use of school notebooks, rather than notepads or single sheets, as writing material - were imposed by prison conditions, while others stem from "rules" which he followed more or less knowingly (some continually and others only in certain phases of his work) in writing the notes. The study of this behaviour, together with a minute analysis of the physical nature of the prison notebooks (covers, interventions by the prison authorities, handwriting and so on) has provided a notable quantity of indirect dating elements which, together with Gramsci's (sparse) direct indications, has allowed us to reconstruct with ever greater precision the chronology of the individual notebooks and the blocks of notes they contain. The composite nature of Gramsci's manuscripts has also emerged quite clearly, manuscripts which may be divided (with some approximation, due to the presence of "mixed notebooks", into notebooks devoted to translation, miscellaneous notebooks and special ones. The new critical edition, devoting one volume (in its turn divided into different books) to each of these three typologies of notebook, aims at the most faithful restoration possible of this essential aspect of the prison work.

Gramsci's prison manuscripts were published, first in a partial form according to subject matter, by Felice Platone and then, in a complete form in chronological order by Valentino Gerratana, with the exception of the translations that Gramsci did between 1929 and 1932. Beginning with L'officina gramsciana (The Gramscian Workshop), Gianni Francioni has carried forward and corrected the work of philological restoration undertaken by Gerratana, arriving at a formulation of the basic criteria for a new publication of the Prison Notebooks within the context of the National Edition of Gramsci's writings. The first volume of the National Edition came out in 2007 and included the Translation Notebooks, of interest for the nexus that emerges with the theoretical notes. The second and third volume, currently underway, will be deal with the miscellaneous notebooks and the "special" ones, arranged in order of writing according to the new chronology that Francioni has established, contained here as an appendix.

For over ten years, Gramsci was a prolific journalist, almost always however in unsigned articles, making it recognition difficult. Progress made in studies on Gramsci's life and thought have shown up the weaknesses of previous collections of his journalistic and political writings in the two series of his Works (the first one coming out between 1954 and 1971 and the second - incomplete - one from 1980 to 1987). The volume relating to the years 1910-1916, shortly forthcoming in the National Edition, and the just published volume on 1917, will contain important novelties, first of all as regards the text, now re-established on the basis of a precise examination of the journals in which they appeared. Textual examination, which has also included a definition of the profile of the journalists who wrote on the same pages, has allowed us to make a better-founded attribution of the anonymous authors, leading to the exclusion of some articles that are known and the inclusion of new ones. Among these is a series of articles devoted to operas, operettas and concerts, which show that Gramsci's relation to music is rather different from the one that criticism has hitherto construed.

Gramsci's Letters are now a twentieth century classic. And yet, from his first letters as a youth, passing through the years spent in Turin, Moscow and Vienna, his relation with letter-writing did not always have the constancy and centrality that it assumed during the prison years. The Letters section of the National Edition of Antonio Gramsci's Writings awaits the integral and critical publication of the entire corpus of the letters through a progressive recovery of the documentation, and a careful historical and philological reconstruction of the contexts and phases in which the letters were written and received. In this way the National Edition aims at restoring Gramsci's correspondence "from a dialogical or dialectical point of view", to use his own words, by reconstructing in all their complexity the "dialogues on paper" in which he was involved during his life.

In this essay we set off on the quest for translation-translatability leitmotiv, remembering that Gramsci was "a revolutionary, a historicist" and, at the same time, a student with a solid background in glottology at the University of Turin. A first starting point, long before the prison years, is the debate on Esperanto, in which Gramsci took part in January 1918. One may consider the idea of the translation of historically determined languages, to which Gramsci later gave so much importance, as the negative side of any "Esperantism". Parallel to this, as from 1919, revolutionary political action came more and more to be presented as a form of translation. The metaphor of the "translation" into the West of the Russian experience, which even in 1925 Gramsci was presenting as typically Leninist, then however was of use to him in the Notebooks as an instrument for theoretical and political emancipation from the Russian experience itself. At the theoretical level, the thought of Labriola was one of the other important sources for the centrality of the idea of translation in Gramsci. It was exactly the text in which Labriola indicated the need to reformulate historical materialism as a "philosophy of praxis" that insisted on the necessity to translate the "arms and methods of criticism" adapting them "from country to country". This text, evoked in one of the very first Notes on Philosophy (Q4, §3, May 1930; in English Prison Notebooks, vol. II, 1996, p. 140; Selections from the Prison Notebooks, 1971, p. 388), is decisive for Gramsci's reflection on the philosophy of praxis as the reciprocal translation of philosophy and politics. This consideration itself is based on certain texts of Marx's (the Theses on Feuerbach and the Holy Family), and was developed in a particularly thoroughgoing way in October and November 1930, months that were crucial for the entire politico-theoretical elaboration of the Notebooks. Gramsci here rethinks Marxism, beginning from the idea of translation both in order to combat schematisms leading to an artificial division of the real between economic noumena and ideologico-political appearances (Croce), and in order to take it away from any dogmatic reduction to an abstract logic or theoretical Esperantism (Bukharin). 1932 was the year of the further and last detailed development of the notion. This now allowed him to think the "reduction" of all philosophies to "a moment of historico-political life" (Q10, II, §6; in English Further Selections from the Prison Notebooks, 1995, p. 306). Moreover, it also became decisive for an understanding of the relation of the philosophy of praxis not only to French politics and classical German philosophy, but also to the economics of David Ricardo. In parallel with this, again in 1932 and also in 1933, in his letters to Julia (Jul'ka) and Tanja, Gramsci makes explicit his conception of the political task of the translator, who must always make use of the "historically determined language" (Lettere dal carcere, 1996, p. 613-614; in English Letters from Prison. Antonio Gramsci, vol. II, 1994, p. 207) of the civilization that adopts a foreign text. In the end, translatability appears as the instrument that allows one to think the unity of theory and practice that, for Gramsci, belongs typically to the thought of Marx and which is the foundation of the superiority of the philosophy of praxis over any other philosophy.

This essay reconstructs a number of the historical-philosophical sources, extraneous to the tradition of Marxist thought, that came together to form the biography of the young Gramsci. It is here hypothesized that the particular itinerary of Gramsci's Marxism, which came to be defined as anti-determinist, may have been influenced by certain philosophical currents (United States and European pragmatism, French post-positivist epistemology) outside the tradition of the Second and Third Internationals. In attempting to challenge a certain revision of Marxism belonging to late nineteenth-century positivism, the young Gramsci made use of theoretical equipment that belonged to epistemology, together with pragmatist psychology, which taken as a whole allowed him to retrace and relaunch the theoretical status of Marx's philosophy.

This essay is devoted to Gramsci's reflection in his Prison Notebooks on language discourse and on languages; its aim is to show how this reflection constituted one of Gramsci's main contributions to Marxism, which up to that time had not had an autonomous theory of language discourse. In this, particular importance is assumed by the notion of translatability, developed in an original direction in the Notebooks. The essay therefore deals with the two most immediate premises of Gramsci's reflections. The first of them is constituted by the debate on language and nationalities in the revolutionary Russia of the 1920s, in relation to the new federal set-up of the soviet State and to the start of anti-illiteracy campaigns. The second premise is constituted by the thought of Antonio Labriola who, while not having been able to provide any personal contribution to linguistic thought, had shown great interest in this subject, which he knew above all through the writings of Wilhelm von Humboldt and Heymann Steinthal.

The article examines the main categories and lines of analysis developed by Gramsci in his analysis of fascism. In order to fully understand fascism's particular characteristics, he developed a reading that brought into play a more general interpretation of the history of Italy and the processes of transformation typical of the capitalist societies of his time. This consisted in an analytical apparatus that evolved over time, with the change in Gramsci's conditions of existence and degree of political involvement, and with the different successive phases of the fascist movement and the dictatorship. The article examines his whole political and intellectual itinerary, with special reference to the reflection carried out during his detention and written down in the Prison Notebooks. The categories that Gramsci developed in this phase are grouped around three clusters of problems which in some cases take up again suggestions and traces of analyses sketched out previously: social classes and historical periods, forms of command (a subject connected with the reflection on "caesarism"-"bonapartism" and on the intellectuals), and "passive revolution" and the nexuses with the changes in capitalism and Fordist modernization.
