The concept of passive revolution is one of the most important and, at the same time, one of the most complex and problematic of the ideas Gramsci developed in prison. In what follows the author try to clarify its meaning and bring some order to the uses, abuses, and oversights it has been subjected to in Latin America, following geographic and chronological criteria, beginning with a review of the uses of the concept by the most prominent and influential Latin American Gramscians in the 1970s and 1980s, followed by a discussion of its more recent uses, and then an assessment of the state of the question.

It highlights the profound ambivalence of Althusser's interpretations. On the one hand, Gramsci is presented as a precursor, as the only figure within the Marxist tradition deemed to have attempted to think the superstructure, and in particular the political. On the other side, the Gramscian corpus is criticized as the paradigmatic instance of a conception of temporality and politics with which Althusser is in disagreement. Regarding the Althusserian critique, we here identify two distinct phases starting out from a critique of the lack of knowledge of the specific status of science in general, especially of the science of history, characteristic of the second half of the sixties, Althusser would, in the late seventies, formulate a critique of the Gramscian concept of hegemony which, in his view, erases the question of class domination., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Actuel Marx], relazioni_identificativo=[], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[1], relazioni_numero_issue=[57], relazioni_start=[62], relazioni_end=[81], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[Octobre 2015], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20151001-20151031], relazioni_tipo_data=[], relazioni_luogo=[Parigi], relazioni_editore=[PUF], relazioni_paese=[FR], soggettivoc=[Althusser, Louis, Marxismo, Egemonia], subjectvoc=[Althusser, Louis, Marxism, Hegemony], note_riservate=, source=Cairn.info, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0020188, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20151001-20151031}]

Arrested and imprisoned by the Italian Fascist regime for his socialist activities in 1926, in the solitary and debilitating conditions of Mussolini's jail he penned one of the most startling works of social and political theory - the Prison Notebooks (1929-1935) - that continues to challenge, intrigue and inspire its readers to this day. This book brings together some of the world's leading scholars on Gramsci to provide an engaging and accessible account of the main ideas, themes and debates in his writings, and to critically explore their relevance for contemporary social and political theory. Among the key themes examined in the book are Gramsci's very influential accounts of state formation, hegemony and ideology, which are explored in relation to contemporary Marxism, the liberal tradition, democratic theory, subaltern studies and post-Marxism., table_contents=Introduction: The Life of a Reflective Revolutionary

We start by going back to twentieth-century Marxist theories of the State, especially the approaches of Gramsci and Poulantzas. We then come to the current intellectual conjuncture. Firstly, we address theories of "anti-power," a set of influential theories that focus on the dimension of social power that is external to the State. We then describe the current renewal of Marxist theories of the State, especially in the work of David Harvey, Giovanni Arrighi, and James O'Connor. One important dimension of this renewal is the connection contemporary Marxists establish between the analysis of the State and the issue of the spaces of capitalism., table_contents=1 - Introduction

influenced by Althusser, Gramsci was representing an "absolute historicism" and thus
a type of an "idealistic" philosophy. Also theoreticians near to the Frankfurt School of
Critical Theory and their students did not discover Gramsci as an important thinker
of Critical Marxism. At the same time, however, more and more isolated Gramscian
terms like "hegemonic apparatus" and "civil society" were being used in political debates,
while the historical and biographical background of this author remained widely
unknown or even wrongly communicated for a long time. Today we can say that only
with the re-contextualization of Gramsci's thoughts by the translation of the Prison
notebooks and the Prison letters, the latter containing also the letters from Gramsci's
female correspondents - mainly Giulia and Tatiana Schucht- was it possible to come to
a mature reception of the themes of subalternity and of "molecular transformations"
of humanity that bind together prison letters and prison notebooks.
Allo stesso tempo, però, concetti gramsciani come
Through the Prison Notebooks and the papers left by Sraffa, it is possible to attempt a reconstruction of the intellectual paths taken by the two authors and discover unexpected convergences, as well as obvious differences. The key concept employed here is that of the 'translatability of scientific languages'. From this concept, Boothman has argued, stems the ‘open' character of Gramsci's Marxism. The theme of the translatability of languages is also present in Sraffa: in a Note written after the important theoretical turning point of the summer of 1927, he states his intention to write a book that will consist in the translation of Marx into English, that is in the translation of the ‘metaphysics' of Hegel into that of Hume. It can be shown that issues that have a prominent importance in Gramsci's thought help us to understand the meaning and importance of Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities.
