Gramsci's view of the role of the socialist party in preparing for the revolution was quite novel. This was to be expected given his novel view of marxism and of the tasks of socialists in advanced capitalist countries. This point has had to be made at the outset because other writers from both the communist party and outside have maintained that Gramsci, on party questions, was in the Leninist tradition.
The author, lecturer in politics at Monash University, continues his series on the great Italian Communist leader, Antonio Gramsci. The article probes the particular features of Gramsci's approach to marxism, pointing to conclusions important to consider in elaborating revolutionary strategies for advanced capitalist countries today.

Veblen's emphasis on the directive to take culture into account occurs later in Antonio Gramsci's theoretical innovations: namely, class struggle for cultural hegemony and the importance of the organic intellectual as ferment for class emergence. Gramsci was experiencing the mass movement of fascism, and the (now) classic analysis of social classes became an urgently needed extension to explain class evolution. Today, capitalism is in deep crisis once again. This paper argues that the drivers of the next revolutionary upheaval will, once more, be the social classes - particularly, the newly emerging ones. One of the most important components of Antonio Gramsci's social theory is his discussion of political strategy, particularly his distinction between 'war of maneuver' and 'war of position'. For Gramsci, the classical model of revolution through military insurrection (war of maneuver) has been supplanted within advanced capitalism by a cultural struggle of much longer duration and complexity (war of position). Despite the significance of Gramsci's analysis of war of maneuver/war of position for contemporary Marxism, it is striking that so little attention has been paid to these terms. These terms have a history, both in military theory and in Marxism, which predates Gramsci's prison notebooks. An examination of the military writings of Engels, Lenin and Trotsky, which are grounded more directly on military theory, leads to different conclusions about the nature of political strategy and the relationship between war of maneuver and war of position.

In this paper is present some of the main ideas developed by Carlos Pereyra around the subjects of politics, the State and civil society. We review his reflections on this notions, placing them in the context of the reception of the intellectual legacy of Antonio Gramsci. Also, we expose the main ideas of Pereyra in the context of the Mexican State during the political conjuncture of the seveties. Our purpose is to locate the thread of continuity between Pereyra's thought and Marxist political theory.

This classic text continues to inform scholarship in the field. While Ideology has received considerable attention, less explored is Apple's scholarship that precedes Ideology. Structured by a chronological reading of articles republished in Ideology, this historical essay sheds new light on Apple's initial formulation of a critical approach to education. In particular, the essay reveals a significant shift in Apple's Marxist influences, from the work of Alvin Gouldner, Trent Schroyer, and Jürgen Habermas in the first half of the 1970s to work in the British New Sociology of Education (NSE) and the ideas of Antonio Gramsci in the second half. In addition to illuminating our understanding of Apple's thought and the history of the field, the essay suggests that reflecting on the intellectual history of the field can help us develop rigorous theory and nuanced analytical tools that enable us to critically examine the social order and push toward radical social change., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Curriculum Inquiry], relazioni_identificativo=[], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[], relazioni_numero_volume=[42], relazioni_numero_issue=[5], relazioni_start=[571], relazioni_end=[596], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[December 2012], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20121201-20121231], relazioni_tipo_data=[], relazioni_luogo=[], relazioni_editore=[Routledge], relazioni_paese=[], soggettivoc=[Marxismo, Ideologia, Educazione (Pedagogia)], subjectvoc=[Marxism, Ideology, Education], note_riservate=, source=onelibrery.wiley.com, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0020102, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=}]
The basic premise of this paper is that the problem in the agency-social structure or subject-social structure relationship is crucial for understanding the present stage of takeoff in the new phase of development or capitalism of knowledge following the recent global crisis of 2007-2009. This expresses the contradiction between neoliberalism, as a political-ideological projection, and a new technological-productive base, as well as the question of differentiation between developed "successful" countries and those that are "backward". Institutionalism and Gramsci's Marxism have offered solutions to the agency-structure dichotomy through very different theoretical approaches, the first seeking to explain the issue of differentiation between countries. Aspects of an alternative explanation are provided here through the Gramscian solution. Available online: http://www.scielo.org (Accessed July 4, 2016)
