Gramsci’s theory of intellectuals is widely cited but rarely closely studied. This article makes a case for a rereading of this theory. This is both desirable and necessary because, as the article shows, it is a more nuanced and yet also encompassing theory than recognized in current scholarship on the sociology of intellectuals, and it actually has much to contribute to a comprehensive modern sociology of intellectuals. This is chiefly by the way it took class into account while transcending it. Far from being limited to a description of intellectuals as class-bound, Gramsci’s theory in fact also saw intellectuals as class-less and a class-in-themselves. It also took into account intrinsic qualities of intellectual production and can contribute to questions in subaltern studies and the study of counter-hegemony.

In regard to Occupy Wall Street (OWS) this is certainly no coincidence. It is indeed easy to list several reasons why a Gramscian approach to OWS is problematic. Isn't it obvious that OWS's claim to be a "leader-less movement" clashes with Gramsci's description of leadership in terms of educating "organic intellectual?" Gramsci's prospective of uniting the industrial proletariat and forging class alliance with the peasants and other subaltern classes through a political party, which meant at the time Communist Party of Italy, part of the Third International, would be rejected by many of those involved in OWS as reflecting an outdated centralist model of representation. For David Graebe the left is neatly divided into "verticalists" and "horizontalists" so that OWS becomes a case in point to demonstrate the virtues of anarchism as against the failures of the Marxist left., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Socialism and Democracy], relazioni_identificativo=[], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[], relazioni_numero_volume=[27], relazioni_numero_issue=[1], relazioni_start=[1], relazioni_end=[18], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[03.2013], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20130301-20130331], relazioni_tipo_data=[], relazioni_luogo=[], relazioni_editore=[], relazioni_paese=[], soggettivoc=[Egemonia, Intellettuali Organici], subjectvoc=[Hegemony, Organic Intellectuals], note_riservate=, source=IGS-Int_2013, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0020023, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=}]

Gramsci's concept of hegemony has been interpreted in a wide variety of ways, including a theory of consent, of political unity, of ‘anti-politics', and of geopolitical competition. These interpretations are united in regarding hegemony as a general theory of political power and domination, and as deriving from a particular interpretation of the concept of passive revolution. Building upon the recent intense season of philological research on the Prison Notebooks, this article argues that the concept of hegemony is better understood as a ‘dialectical chain' composed of four integrally related ‘moments': hegemony as social and political leadership, as a political project, as a hegemonic apparatus, and as the social and political hegemony of the workers' movement. This alternative typology of hegemony provides both a sophisticated analysis of the emergence of modern state power and a theory of political organization of the subaltern social groups. This project is encapsulated in Gramsci's notion of the formation of a ‘modern Prince', conceived as both political party and civilizational process, which represents an emancipatory alternative to the dominant forms of political modernity.

The struggle for hegemony and the action of intellectuals in the cultural formation of social groups, subjects which are the central theme of Antonio Gramsci's (1891-1937) analyses, have shown the importance of education for the consolidation of a hegemony, whether through schooling or non-school education, carried out by political parties and trade unions. The aim of this paper is to analyze the ideas underlying Gramsci's propositions on education taking as its starting point a study of the Quaderni del carcere, as it showed that the educational action undertaken by intellectual groups was impregnated by/with contradictions which influenced the development and success of the working classes in drawing up a counter hegemony.

The article problematizes the self-positioning of Laclau's theory of hegemony in the "post-Marxist" field and in socialist traditions, from the analysis of the positions and debates with the intellectual thinkers who questioned him from Marxist and leftist traditions. Based on the analysis of their convergences, theoretical tensions and onto-epistemological ruptures with/ against Marxist and socialist traditions, it seeks to contribute to evaluate the validity of the criticism and, at the same time, promote a greater dialogism and debate with these theoretical, social and political conceptions.

The aim of this paper is to convey the relevance of a Gramscian perspective in medical anthropology, stressing his anti-essentialist way of reasoning about 'nature'. The author claims that Gramsci's understandings of the bodily life of the state can deconstruct naturalized realities in ways that are helpful for the ethnographer engaged in the political anthropology of embodiment and the management of health, persons, and life itself. The paper is presented in three parts. An attempt is made, first, to frame the relevance of Gramsci for Italian medical anthropology and second, to explore the components of the Gramscian concept of 'second nature' within the perspective that he himself calls 'an anthropology'. Third, an example is given of how the proposed Gramscian insights could inform an ethnography on the biopolitical aspects for the early detection of Alzheimer's disease, which is currently being carried out in Perugia.

In his classic study "Americanism and Fordism", written in 1934, Antonio Gramsci dedicated himself to analyzing the influence of Taylorism/Fordism on American society's social and cultural development, especially transformations operated in the political culture of the factory labourer. Revealing in Taylorism/Fordism capitalism's ample ideological strategy, Gramsci perceived in this system more than a simple set of methods of organizing and managing labour activities. It was, above all, a set of principles that persuaded and coerced labourers in their actions beyond the companies' space, conforming them within ideas and a lifestyle perfectly adequate to the necessities of the emerging mass industrialization. In this effort, Gramsci attained significant clarity regarding the magnitude of the influence of the social structure, of the State and of the class struggle over the development of the productive forces, mainly in regards to the management of labour, demonstrating the dialectic character of these spheres. Our goal in this work, is to resume points of this Gramscian reading of Taylorism/Fordism, observing the scope and depth of his arguments.
The article argues that the current financial crisis that began unfolding in late 2007 cannot be explained merely by institutional failure, false economic theories, or human misbehavior. Instead, the crisis must be analyzed against the backdrop of the internal contradictions of capitalist accumulation and the gradual disintegration of the post-war hegemonic world order under U.S. leadership. The specifics of the crisis are inherently related to the failure of Fordism in the 1970s and the emergence of a post-Fordist, neoliberal, and finance-driven regime of accumulation that was pushed to its limits in the lead-up to the current downturn. This article does not try to "rethink" the theory of Antonio Gramsci to redefine his concepts and give some examples of them to match theory with reality, as does the pseudo-science. On the contrary, I want "unthinking" to put his theory trial to see the validity of the concepts, making a critical reflection in order to bring something new to a work that has been widely studied by critics and commentators, and respond where the validity of classical thinking to analyze contemporary phenomena is.

This article is a classic and fundamental for approaching global power relations with the conceptual tools developed by Gramsci. Cox contributes to critical thought in International Relations by discussing various gramscian concepts and what their implications are for the study of different historical forms of hegemony and counter-hegemony. Also, the author draws our attention -novel at the time of its publicaction- to the relevance of taking into account the construction of domestic counter-hegemonic historic blocs. He suggests that these could have a revolutionary effect on international structures and organizations, as well as rupture with the hegemony performed by the transnational economic order.
This essay examines the importance of Antonio Gramsci's concepts of hegemony and dominance for anticolonial movements. Hegemony is a practice of power that rests substantially on the consent of various strata achieved by groups possessing or seeking state power, whereas dominance relies primarily on coercion. Subaltern groups and revolutionary parties, Gramsci argues, must displace ruling-class hegemony and become hegemonic themselves before assuming state power. But not all ruling classes are integrally hegemonic. As Ranajit Guha argues, colonialism represents 'dominance without hegemony.' Examining Frantz Fanon's discussion of anticolonial nationalism, I argue that even in situations of apparent dominance without hegemony, subaltern classes and revolutionary parties must achieve hegemony before state power for genuine decolonization. The essay argues that the emergence, consolidation, and problematic outcomes of FRELIMO's (Front for the Liberation of Mozambique) resistance to Portuguese colonialism indicate the need to pay close attention to the dialectic of hegemony before dominance. The paper examines Althusser's readings of Gramsci, from the first critical notes and annotations to his writings on the crisis of Marxism. It highlights the profound ambivalence of Althusser's interpretations. On the one hand, Gramsci is presented as a precursor, as the only figure within the Marxist tradition deemed to have attempted to think the superstructure, and in particular the political. On the other side, the Gramscian corpus is criticized as the paradigmatic instance of a conception of temporality and politics with which Althusser is in disagreement. Regarding the Althusserian critique, we here identify two distinct phases: starting out from a critique of the lack of knowledge of the specific status of science in general, especially of the science of history, characteristic of the second half of the sixties, Althusser would, in the late seventies, formulate a critique of the Gramscian concept of hegemony which, in his view, erases the question of class domination.
