For Said, Gramsci produced a certain type of critical consciousness that was geographical and spatial in its fundamental coordinates. It is argued that there is a critical consciousness within Gramsci's philosophy of praxis that embodies a spatial sense of locating or situating theory within specific circumstances. Elements of this critical consciousness are examined in the second division of the argument, which embarks on producing a specific reading of passive revolution to assert the wider spatial and geographical relevance of the concept and its conditions. The second section argues for a re-evaluation of Gramsci's accounts of cosmopolitanism. To develop the focus on the importance of Gramsci's internationalist trajectories, the final section explores how Gramsci's political articulations and analyses moved in the early postwar period. Interrogating the relations between cosmopolitanism and internationalism, as Gramsci's suggestive arguments allow, permits a shift beyond narrowly nation-centered accounts of internationalism. It emerges from these notes that the course's influence is seen in the Prison Notebooks (1929-35), not only in obvious echoes of Part I of Bartoli's course on the history of Latin and the other languages of the ancient Italian peninsula and its peoples, but especially Part II of the course, dealing mainly with the complex linguistic situation of the Balkans, that underlies the language-social groups relationship characterizing Gramsci's approach to the 'language question' in the prison writings. While information on Gramsci's time in Russia is still sketchy, we know that in addition to attending official events, he travelled to several Russian cities, including Petrograd, where he gave lectures. A trained linguist, Gramsci achieved a significant level of competence in Russian and was exposed to a wide range of political and intellectual debates where the cultural and linguistic dimensions of hegemony were central concerns. This pertained to questions of mass literacy, the standardization of languages and public discourse, the national question and questions of agitation and propaganda. The traces these debates left on Gramsci's Prison Notebooks have not been subjected to adequate scrutiny. In its form the 'culture' of modern Europe repeats the antagonisms of society, and re-establishes a no longer immediately given substantiality. This formal correspondence between culture and society explains Gramsci's thoroughgoing reformulation of categories like 'Reformation' and 'Renaissance'. The former expresses the need for the national aggregation of the masses, and the latter the autonomous development of the intellectuals, while together they express the two sides of modern state power, synthesized only in German Idealism. Following Hegel, Gramsci sees the modern state as a (partial) fusion of 'reason' and 'mass', 'philosophy' and 'religion' and, as such, bourgeois culture's most powerful source of hegemony. The crisis following the First World War did not change this structure decisively: fascism, too, had to produce consent and hegemony. Although little known outside Italy, Gobetti was a regular, if marginal, presence in Gramsci's circle of associations in Turin. His idiosyncratic doctrine of 'revolutionary liberalism' owed much to Gramsci's Factory Council theory and, later, Gramsci himself identified Gobetti as the type of radicalized intellectual the Communist Party ought to engage in its struggle for hegemony. In the Prison Notebooks, too, Gobetti's novel interpretation of Italy's post-war crisis received several references and shared much with Gramsci's own. Yet, despite their mutual admiration and appropriation, the connection between the two can be understood in terms of an 'elective affinity', that is, an association based on selected compatibilities. For Gramsci, and others, this condition isn't about who is working 'hard enough', but rather 'who is working' (and what type of work!)? The fundamental problem with our class consciousness is that it is skewed: Culturally we believe that some people are more deserving than others. What does this have to do with social change? When we consider that global, consumer capitalism engulfs our everyday lives, we must be attune to its everyday impact and influence on our subjectivity. Relatedly, we should consider everyday 'pockets of resistance' - such as the surgical cleaner or the coffee house frequenter - who can contribute to what Gramsci refers to as the 'war of position' so that a more dedicated, organised, and significant cultural entity can develop and have power - known as the 'war of maneuver'. In other words, Gramsci's 'war of position' might best be served by educators and everyday citizens who suggest that what we have could be better - a (re)framing of 'common sense', in Gramscian terms, into 'good sense'. This paper will address not only the problem of how global capitalism is articulated into everyday discourse, but also how the common, cultural fabric of American life can attempt to combat it. During this pivotal period Gramsci developed a complex analysis of fascism's approach to leadership. He addressed Mussolini's charisma in relation to the unique aspects of the fascist regime as a corporative system, a feature that was fostered by the mobilization of the petit-bourgeoisie and the depoliticization of the masses. Gramsci refuted Michels' thesis about charisma and developed his own autonomous path of research, applying Max Weber's study on German militarism in new contexts.
