Employing a neo-Gramscian theoretical framework, the study relates how a section of the media defied censorship laws, outright bans, incarceration and the assassination of opposition figures, to prosecute the struggle for democracy. It captures the tensions and contradictions between a pliant section of the media which sought to legitimise the state and a critical section of the same media which, in alliance with radical civil society, invented rebellious outlets to carry on the struggle against dictatorship. The study seeks to make fresh departures by documenting not only the role of the national media in the throes of democratic struggle, but that of the international media whose role was influential in the years studied. Finally the report offers empirical proof of the mechanisms by which a vibrant civil society can curb the ravages of a predatory state in an African country. Drake offers an invaluable genealogy of Marxist thinkers and demonstrates how Marx and Marxism -- far from being a monolithic ideology -- were adapted to Italian political, economic, and cultural realities on the ground. In Drake's reading, Mussolini and the forgotten Amadeo Bordiga both come off as more sincere than does Gramsci. This challenge to the usual saintly portrait of Gramsci is welcome, as Drake is honest in both his criticism and praise. It is indeed a formidable cast of characters, but Drake does not neglect non-Marxist thinkers such as Filippo Turati (the grand old man of Italian socialism), Karl Kautsky, Eduard Bernstein, Vilfredo Pareto, and Georges Sorel (Stanislao G. Pugliese, Journal of Modern History)., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, soggettivoc=[Rivoluzione], subjectvoc=[Revolution], note_riservate=, source=http://websok.libris.kb.se e Amazon, recordInfo=lrighi@fondazionegramsci.org, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0014786, recordOrigin=agg6-672., condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20030101-20031231}]

Gramsci advocated a 'war of position', the building of political alliances to isolate existing state powers and win consent for revolutionary rule and transform society. Economic reform is now creating new socio-economic groups and the CCP is adjusting the united front and the MPGs to co-opt their representatives and deliberately forestall the evolution of an autonomous civil society and middle class which could challenge CCP rule. This has resulted in a new and expanding role for the united front, the MPGs and organisations representing the new interest groups. Gramsci's theories also help explain why the original MPGs are now more-or-less irrelevant and being replaced by new bodies as the connections between these organisations and their ostensible target groups are ever more tenuous and far from those required to effectively connect with China's new organic intellectuals."
