On a number of occasions during his detention, Gramsci spoke of his wish to go into linguistic questions in depth. The best known sources for this are the letter to Tania of 19 March 1927, point 12 of the Main Arguments outlined on 8 February 1929, The language question in Italy: Manzoni and Ascoli and Notebook 29, the last of the monographic notebooks, entitled Notes for an Introduction to the study of grammar, which he started at the clinic in Formia and whose reflections begin from his reading of Alfredo Panzini's Guide to Italian Grammar. Gramsci had already devoted attention to the polemic between Ascoli and Manzoni, and in a letter to his sister-in-law of 17 November 1930 he wrote that, ten years earlier, he had collected material for an essay on the language question according to Manzoni, which was also the object of his analysis in the article A single language and Esperanto ("Il Grido del Popolo", 16 February 1918). His reflection in prison took up again his youthful intuitions, inserting them into the framework of Marxism as a philosophy of praxis. The language question thus became the tangential point for a series of Gramscian concepts: the relationship between structure and superstructures, hegemony, the conception of the world, common sense, the subaltern social groups, the unity of theory and practice, and translatability. The present contribution seeks to bring out the most significant moments of this reflection.

For Gramsci, and others, this condition isn't about who is working 'hard enough', but rather 'who is working' (and what type of work!)? The fundamental problem with our class consciousness is that it is skewed: Culturally we believe that some people are more deserving than others. What does this have to do with social change? When we consider that global, consumer capitalism engulfs our everyday lives, we must be attune to its everyday impact and influence on our subjectivity. Relatedly, we should consider everyday 'pockets of resistance' - such as the surgical cleaner or the coffee house frequenter - who can contribute to what Gramsci refers to as the 'war of position' so that a more dedicated, organised, and significant cultural entity can develop and have power - known as the 'war of maneuver'. In other words, Gramsci's 'war of position' might best be served by educators and everyday citizens who suggest that what we have could be better - a (re)framing of 'common sense', in Gramscian terms, into 'good sense'. This paper will address not only the problem of how global capitalism is articulated into everyday discourse, but also how the common, cultural fabric of American life can attempt to combat it. By praxis is meant those forms of critical theoretical and practical activity that are not only linked to understanding, explaining and acting in international relations but also transforming those relations to help constitute a more ethical, just and sustainable world order. The argument is developed as follows: (1) discussion of theoretical perspectives, and how they constitute dominant paradigms of International Relations in the West, particularly in the USA. Such dominant paradigms are shaped by a liberal ontology, opposed to Marxism and critical theory. (2) A critique of 'imperial common sense' that is bound up with US supremacy in an unjust world of deepening crises, growing inequality, social dislocations and unsustainable accumulation. Here my argument involves a dialectical strategy that critically addresses the nature, self-evidence and global influence of mainstream American International Relations. (3) A discussion of how new forms of praxis are emerging, seeking to develop radical alternatives that are sober, imaginative, sustainable and politically and ethically credible - in the multiple, diverse and new forms of political agency reflected in the figure of the 'post-modern Prince'. The article begins with a brief look at the anthropological notion of culture and some of its ghosts, contrasting this with Gramsci's very different approach. It goes on to look in detail at Gramsci's concept of 'common sense', arguing that common sense as theorized by Gramsci provides anthropologists (whose discipline is so concerned with the quotidian) and others, with a useful theoretical tool with which to map everyday life. Gramsci's understanding of common sense encompasses its givenness - how it is both constitutive of our subjectivity and confronts us as an external reality - but also stresses its contradictions, fluidity and potential for change. In brief, if we are to explain convincingly the evolution of national political economies, then we must acknowledge that varieties of capitalism are also varieties in capitalism. In particular, Antonio Gramsci's writings on common sense enable us to focus on the role of institutions as a historical force without abandoning the system of production that they are part of. It does so through a critical engagement with two prominent historical materialist literatures - transnational historical materialism and uneven and combined development. I argue that, in contrast to these contributions, a nationally-oriented perspective utilizing Antonio Gramsci's writings on 'common sense' has greater potential for narrowing the optic from broader concerns to fine-grained analysis. Although Gramsci often associates the problem of political fragmentation among subaltern groups with issues concerning language and common sense, there are only a few notes where he explicitly connects his overlapping analyses of language and subalternity. We build on the few places in the literature on Gramsci that focus on how he relates common sense to the questions of language or subalternity. By explicitly tracing out these relations, we hope to bring into relief the direct connections between subalternity and language by showing how the concepts overlap with respect to Gramsci's analyses of common sense, intellectuals, philosophy, folklore, and hegemony. We argue that, for Gramsci, fragmentation of any social group's 'common sense', worldview and language is a political detriment, impeding effective political organisation to counter exploitation but that such fragmentation cannot be overcome by the imposition of a 'rational' or 'logical' worldview. Instead, what is required is a deep engagement with the fragments that make up subaltern historical, social, economic and political conditions. In our view, Gramsci provides an alternative both to the celebration of fragmentation fashionable in liberal multiculturalism and uncritical postmodernism, as well as other attempts of overcoming it through recourse to some external, transcendental or imposed worldview. This is fully in keeping with, and further elucidates Gramsci's understanding of the importance of effective 'democratic centralism' of the leadership of the party in relation to the rank and file and the popular masses.
