This classic text continues to inform scholarship in the field. While Ideology has received considerable attention, less explored is Apple's scholarship that precedes Ideology. Structured by a chronological reading of articles republished in Ideology, this historical essay sheds new light on Apple's initial formulation of a critical approach to education. In particular, the essay reveals a significant shift in Apple's Marxist influences, from the work of Alvin Gouldner, Trent Schroyer, and Jürgen Habermas in the first half of the 1970s to work in the British New Sociology of Education (NSE) and the ideas of Antonio Gramsci in the second half. This paper tries to sketch the continuity between the topics of government and subjectification and that of discipline and bodies in Foucault's work by assessing the pervasiveness and the importance of the two poles of what Foucault himself, in a Kantian fashion, called a critique of political reason: individualization and totalization. In the first place, I will sketch the mode of functioning of "government" with reference to the pastorate invented by the Christian Church, showing that the theme of government and of its historical origins appears for the first time when Foucault talks about the disciplinary powers of normalization of 19th-century psychiatry. In the second place, I will approach directly the logic of strategy that makes intelligible the relationships between government and discipline. Finally, these two concepts will be included in what Foucault called the double modern political rationality, and the persistence of this topic, in different forms, in many of his historico-philosophical analyses, and above all as the two sides of what he famously called bio-power. The main claim is that the relationship between the concepts of governmentality (the effect of which is totalization) and discipline (the effect of which is individualization) is neither one of conceptual incompatibility nor one of chronological succession in the development of Foucault's thought, but rather a relation of interdependence that needs to be pointed out and further articulated in order to understand and pursue a critique of modern political reason.

The article argues that the current financial crisis that began unfolding in late 2007 cannot be explained merely by institutional failure, false economic theories, or human misbehavior. Instead, the crisis must be analyzed against the backdrop of the internal contradictions of capitalist accumulation and the gradual disintegration of the post-war hegemonic world order under U.S. leadership. The specifics of the crisis are inherently related to the failure of Fordism in the 1970s and the emergence of a post-Fordist, neoliberal, and finance-driven regime of accumulation that was pushed to its limits in the lead-up to the current downturn.

The great British miners' strike of 1984-1985 began 30 years ago. This personal reflection centres on the debate over trade union strategy during the strike. The Communist Party of Great Britain (CP) had long been an important influence in the leadership of the National Union of Mineworkers, but the strike also coincided with and exacerbated divisions within the CP and the wider left about how to respond to the ‘New Right' Thatcher Conservative Government. This article focuses on the distinctive Eurocommunist analysis of the journal Marxism Today. The political atmosphere of the time is recalled, and then the Gramscian industrial relations strategy of winning the political argument through a ‘broad democratic alliance' is reconstructed. Arguably, this ‘social movement' approach could have produced a better outcome to the strike, while it provides lasting lessons about the limitations of a narrowly economistic view of trade union power.

Now as then, it is argued, there is the risk that a systemic economic crisis and the crisis of representative politics will in turn lead to authoritarian outcomes. Rarer, however, is the idea that the current political and economic crisis may lead to a "progressive" outcome. This article examines both options under the light of the thinking of one of the most important interpreters of political crisis and change in the 1920s and 1930s: Antonio Gramsci. One of the central arguments in Gramsci's Prison Notebooks is the crisis of parliamentarism and democratic politics. Gramsci did not limit his analysis to the crisis however. His theoretical undertaking also consisted in the attempt to imagine the conditions for moving beyond the democratic crisis in a progressive manner. Through the Prison Notebooks and the papers left by Sraffa, it is possible to attempt a reconstruction of the intellectual paths taken by the two authors and discover unexpected convergences, as well as obvious differences. The key concept employed here is that of the 'translatability of scientific languages'. From this concept, Boothman has argued, stems the 'open' character of Gramsci's Marxism. The theme of the translatability of languages is also present in Sraffa: in a Note written after the important theoretical turning point of the summer of 1927, he states his intention to write a book that will consist in the translation of Marx into English, that is in the translation of the 'metaphysics' of Hegel into that of Hume. It can be shown that issues that have a prominent importance in Gramsci's thought help us to understand the meaning and importance of Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities.

This essay examines the importance of Antonio Gramsci's concepts of hegemony and dominance for anticolonial movements. Hegemony is a practice of power that rests substantially on the consent of various strata achieved by groups possessing or seeking state power, whereas dominance relies primarily on coercion. Subaltern groups and revolutionary parties, Gramsci argues, must displace ruling-class hegemony and become hegemonic themselves before assuming state power. But not all ruling classes are integrally hegemonic. As Ranajit Guha argues, colonialism represents 'dominance without hegemony.' Examining Frantz Fanon's discussion of anticolonial nationalism, I argue that even in situations of apparent dominance without hegemony, subaltern classes and revolutionary parties must achieve hegemony before state power for genuine decolonization. The essay argues that the emergence, consolidation, and problematic outcomes of FRELIMO's (Front for the Liberation of Mozambique) resistance to Portuguese colonialism indicate the need to pay close attention to the dialectic of hegemony before dominance. One of the most important features of Gramsci's social theory was his analysis of the distinction between war of maneuver and war of position. In the context of a relatively underdeveloped civil society such as is found in the 'East,' he argued, revolutionary strategy required a direct frontal assault-a war of maneuver-against the principal form of bourgeois political power: the state. In the 'West,' however, with its more fully developed civil society, such a direct, lightning frontal assault against the state must be a slower, more protracted process of siege warfare, a war of position, in which subordinate classes wear away the existing civil society and, through their self-organization, create a new one (Gramsci 1971). The theoretical confrontations between Pierre Bourdieu and Antonio Gramsci staged by Michael Burawoy in Conversations with Bourdieu (2012) and in the journal Sociol- ogy (2012) make an important contribution to our understanding of the relationship between these thinkers. As part of his wider project of 'Sociological Marxism', Burawoy juxtaposes the historicity of Gramsci's notion of hegemony with the durable nature of symbolic domination based on misrecognition in Bourdieu. While this contrast is illumi- nating, I argue that Burawoy's portrayal of Gramsci primarily as a theorist of consent is limited, and suffers from a lack of engagement with Gramsci scholarship drawing on the critical edition of his writings. I consider some of the opportunities presented by wider articulations of Bourdieu's work from a Marxist perspective, aiming to outline the terms within which a more sustained comparative study of Bourdieu and Gramsci might be attempted.

This series of work was inspired by the language and ideas of Anto- nio! Within political structures of autonomy and resistance, the works play with Gramsci's words and ideas. I have twisted the structure and form of the words, but not the foundation. His intentions reside with- in the visual in this series of text-based works. In consideration of the proletariat, the working class and the workers body these works reveal critical political implications of language use, ideas and visual culture. The article analyzes, historically and comparatively, the unfolding of this strategy during the period from 1982 to 2007, emphasizing how its success triggered heightened state repression, which ultimately prevented Islamists from capitalizing politically on their growing cultural power. The coercive capacity of modern states, as this article demonstrates, can preserve a regime's political domination long after it has lost its cultural hegemony.
