The article focuses on the conceptualizations of "subaltern" and "hegemony" in Gramsci's thought. The author argues that understanding the nature of the subaltern social groups is of fundamental importance for understanding the way in which economic relations and the State are constituted, and the way in which these relations contribute to consolidating a given hegemony, of which they are at the same time also a product. Subalternity and hegemony are key formulae in Gramsci's political theory, and are linked to his theory of translatability in that they translate the relations that constitute a State, at the same time as founding the necessity for a wide-ranging strategic plan for the task of transforming social relations. Pedagogical formation and political practice are, then, the languages in which the relations of force are constructed. From these nexuses there emerges the centrality of the formative dimension of the strategic construction of a struggle for power, in that hegemony and education are dialectically connected and express the theory and practice of the project as formulated by Gramsci for overcoming subalternity. The reflections that come together in this text have their origin in the seminars and discussions of the Ghilarza Summer School held at Ghilarza from 8 to 12 September 2014 on the subject of Hegemonic/subaltern.

Through adopting Antonio Gramsci's concept of passive revolution, the article shows that whilst China has witnessed a significant degree of spontaneous and unorganised labour unrest, the state has been highly active in seeking to forestall the emergence of a politically conscious organised labour movement in ways that have important implications for the mode of China's insertion into the international division of labour. In accordance with Gramsci's framework, this 'revolution from above' should be understood within the framework and the specificity of the international states system. Labour struggles, class formation and the role of the state in these processes are conditioned both by geopolitical rivalry and by the demonstrative effects of earlier cases of successful industrialisation, as well as by examples of resultant labour struggles., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Capital and Class], relazioni_identificativo=[], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[34], relazioni_numero_issue=[3], relazioni_start=[449], relazioni_end=[467], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[2010], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20101010-20112310], relazioni_tipo_data=[inferred], relazioni_luogo=[], relazioni_editore=[], relazioni_paese=[GB], soggettivoc=[Rivoluzione Passiva, Studi di caso, Cina, Lavoro, Stato], subjectvoc=[Passive revolution, case studies, China, Labor, State], note_riservate=, source=IGS-2010, recordInfo=francescogiasi@libero.it, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0018383, recordOrigin=MODS.2CA74881DF2E765, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20101010-20112310}]

It argues that passive revolution-understood as the state-led reorganisation of social relations that seeks to maintain or restore class domination-can be seen as a recurring theme of Mexican history in the 20th century. In order to make this case, the author examines the Mexican Revolution and elaborates the case for labelling it as a 'passive revolution'. Following this, the contradictory character of Mexico's development trajectory is explored, and the resulting restructuring of the economy along neoliberal lines is interpreted as a second phase of passive revolution. Through an analysis of changing state formation and the spaces and scales associated with it, the article thereby highlights the key antinomies of capitalist development that have augured the recurrence of passive revolutions., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Capital and Class], relazioni_identificativo=[], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[34], relazioni_numero_issue=[3], relazioni_start=[383], relazioni_end=[407], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[2010], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20101010-20112310], relazioni_tipo_data=[inferred], relazioni_luogo=[], relazioni_editore=[], relazioni_paese=[GB], soggettivoc=[Rivoluzione Passiva, Studi di caso, Messico, Stato], subjectvoc=[Passive revolution, case studies, Mexico, State], note_riservate=, source=IGS-2010, recordInfo=francescogiasi@libero.it, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0018384, recordOrigin=MODS.2CA74881EE9C7F5, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20101010-20112310}]

Over the course of the twentieth century, comparative political scientists' core questions have changed very little. From Weber and Gramsci to Almond, Verba and Skocpol, their concerns have centred on why people obey and on what sorts of structures and cultures facilitates obedience and conformist behaviour. The elements that political scientists have singled out for investigation as the key to understanding obedience and conformity have included the usual suspects: parliaments, Bureaucracies, governmental leadership, courts and law, and police and military. We work exegetically with Gramsci's text, using tools of lexical analysis and paying particular attention to the presence of the expression "state life" of which he makes ample use in his in his Quaderni del carcere. Several elements capable of clarifying the Gramscian conception of the State flow from this expression. They are useful in our reconsideration of his complex reflections on the "historic" problem of democracy, with its fragile balance between critique, renovation and exclusion of the traditional forms of modern democracy.
