of language, especially the use of the notion of hegemony in debates about English as a global
language; 2) the role of Gramsci's linguistic interests in shaping his intellectual biography, from his
university years to his encounter with Soviet Russia's cultural and political life in the early 1920s; and,
finally, 3) Gramsci's own use of the Italian language in his writings. With regard to the second area
of study, new evidence is presented of Gramsci's interest in proletarian culture and of his contacts
with the Proletkult movement. By surveying a wide range of different topics (including Esperanto
and language planning), the paper aims to identify the shortcomings of the existing scholarship, and

On a number of occasions during his detention, Gramsci spoke of his wish to go into linguistic questions in depth. The best known sources for this are the letter to Tania of 19 March 1927, point 12 of the Main Arguments outlined on 8 February 1929, The language question in Italy: Manzoni and Ascoli and Notebook 29, the last of the monographic notebooks, entitled Notes for an Introduction to the study of grammar, which he started at the clinic in Formia and whose reflections begin from his reading of Alfredo Panzini's Guide to Italian Grammar. Gramsci had already devoted attention to the polemic between Ascoli and Manzoni, and in a letter to his sister-in-law of 17 November 1930 he wrote that, ten years earlier, he had collected material for an essay on the language question according to Manzoni, which was also the object of his analysis in the article A single language and Esperanto ("Il Grido del Popolo", 16 February 1918). His reflection in prison took up again his youthful intuitions, inserting them into the framework of Marxism as a philosophy of praxis. The language question thus became the tangential point for a series of Gramscian concepts: the relationship between structure and superstructures, hegemony, the conception of the world, common sense, the subaltern social groups, the unity of theory and practice, and translatability. The present contribution seeks to bring out the most significant moments of this reflection.

The Gramscian notion of hegemony is employed by contemporary linguistic anthropology and cultural studies. A parallelism between the description of the « hegemony apparatus » and the « centres of irradiation of linguistic innovations » can actually be observed in the Prison Notebooks. This fact is the result of two different issues discussed in the leading group of the Bolshevik party during the 1920s: the debate on the hegemony (i.e. the relationship between the working class and the countrymen) that followed the Lenin death, and the linguistic planning of the revolutionary state. Gramsci elaborated these two lines of thinking and connected them in an original way within the Notebooks 10 and 11. In such a theoretical development, he uses not only notions on language learned during his university studies on linguistics, but also notions of the « Völkerpsychology » diffused by Antonio Labriola, the founder of the Italian Marxism.

This issue of «Laboratoire italien» reports on the current state of the research on Gramsci in Italy. From the point of view of their subject matter, the contributions collected in this issue can be divided into two main areas, which ultimately feed on each other: the editions, on the one hand, and on the other, the critical studies. The first section hosts contributions on the new editions, framed in the project - started in 1990 and still in progress - of the the Edizione nazionale degli scritti di Antonio Gramsci. In particular, it gathers essays on the new editions of the Prison Notebooks, the Writings 1910-1926 and the Correspondence. These articles give an account of the innovations - both in the method and content - that these new editions have produced. The section opens with an extensive essay by Gianni Francioni who studies the way Gramsci worked through the manuscript of the Notebooks, revealing its structure and diachronic features in the light of the latest philological findings. The second section collects studies on certain issues and concepts previously neglected, and that in the last two decades are emerging as crucial: pragmatism, linguistics, the interpretation of fascism, of corporatism and post-liberal societies, the category of "translatability", the relationship with Vico's philosophy. The issue is concluded (third section) by Giuseppe Vacca with a comprehensive overview of the most significant interpretations of Gramsci in Italy in recent years.
This essay is devoted to Gramsci's reflection in his Prison Notebooks on language discourse and on languages; its aim is to show how this reflection constituted one of Gramsci's main contributions to Marxism, which up to that time had not had an autonomous theory of language discourse. In this, particular importance is assumed by the notion of translatability, developed in an original direction in the Notebooks. The essay therefore deals with the two most immediate premises of Gramsci's reflections. The first of them is constituted by the debate on language and nationalities in the revolutionary Russia of the 1920s, in relation to the new federal set-up of the soviet State and to the start of anti-illiteracy campaigns. The second premise is constituted by the thought of Antonio Labriola who, while not having been able to provide any personal contribution to linguistic thought, had shown great interest in this subject, which he knew above all through the writings of Wilhelm von Humboldt and Heymann Steinthal.

While information on Gramsci's time in Russia is still sketchy, we know that in addition to attending official events, he travelled to several Russian cities, including Petrograd, where he gave lectures. A trained linguist, Gramsci achieved a significant level of competence in Russian and was exposed to a wide range of political and intellectual debates where the cultural and linguistic dimensions of hegemony were central concerns. This pertained to questions of mass literacy, the standardization of languages and public discourse, the national question and questions of agitation and propaganda. The traces these debates left on Gramsci's Prison Notebooks have not been subjected to adequate scrutiny. After an introduction (section 1), where the letter from prison of 19 March 1927 is analyzed, section 2 is dedicated to discovering Gramsci's scientific past through the contributions of Luigi Russo, Vittorio Santoli, Giuseppe Vidossi, Benvenuto Terracini, Benedetto Croce and Palmiro Togliatti, in 1947-1949. The relationships between the young Gramsci and the linguists Francesco Ribezzo and Matteo Bartoli are illustrated in sections 3 and 4, where the lecture notes from academic year 1912-1913 (Matteo Bartoli, Course of Historical Linguistics, University of Turin), taken down by Gramsci, are examined. Then, section 5 illustrates Gramsci's Sardinian studies, and his likely contribution to Wilhelm Meyer-Lübke's Romanisches etymologisches Wörterbuch, with the task of checking its Sardinian lexical material. Gramsci's studies in Greek, Latin and Sanskrit comparative grammar, and his interest in the methodological writings of Antoine Meillet (particularly in the topics of the social conception of language, the regularity of linguistic change and the descriptive value of sound laws, language contact and the relationships among European linguistic traditions), are illustrated in section 6. Section 7 underlines the unique nature of the Italian school of dialectology, in which Gramsci was educated, and the scientific debate on Romance and Indo-European etymology at the beginning of 20th century, and illustrates the specific positions of Meyer-Lübke and Meillet, along with their differences from those of Jules Gilliéron and Hugo Schuchardt (as well as Croce's). This essay looks at the relationship between formative aesthetics, language and the historical anticipation that begins with Antonio Gramsci's discussion of Kant's idea of "noumenon". In Gramsci both education (as "formazione") and aesthetics stem from a concern for power in terms of the hegemonic relations that are inherent to history as a political horizon. The title cites Gramci's suggestion that Kant's "noumenon" should be read as a proviso set apart by a "relative ignorance" of reality ["relativa ignoranza" "della realta"] to be resolved by a future science. Yet far from another epistemological layering, a future science must also resolve those hegemonic relations of power that emerge from formation as a political act figured in the agonistic character of language as "lingua" and "linguaggio"., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Educational Philosophy and Theory], relazioni_identificativo=[], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[43], relazioni_numero_issue=[6], relazioni_start=[579], relazioni_end=[597], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[August, 2011], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20110800-20110800], relazioni_tipo_data=[inferred], relazioni_luogo=[], relazioni_editore=[John Wiley & Sons], relazioni_paese=[GB], soggettivoc=[Lingua (e Linguistica), Estetica], subjectvoc=[Language (including Linguistics), Esthetics], note_riservate=, source=IGS-2011, recordInfo=francescogiasi@libero.it, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0019325, recordOrigin=MODS.2CB335342E05928, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20110800-20110800}]

Paulo Freire's (1987) critical reading proposals formulated for literacy programs of the poor in Brazil are outlined, focusing on the role of the teacher; the school in the development of critical reader by removing the experience of social oppression from the language instruction process. Reading is viewed as a process for students to develop a critical perspective on the world. The teacher's principal role is to explain the contexts, including ideological worlds; discursive universes, in which meanings are formed; make the text more transparent; interpretable to the student. This proposal based on a functional approach to language teaching is elaborated with H. A. Giroux's (1983); A. Gramsci's (1971) resistance theory within which the notion of resistant reading is conceived of as a conscious process of questioning political hegemonies; social ideologies. 19 References. Z.
