Can Ricardo be attributed - asks Gramsci - with a contribution "synthetic" to the development of Marx's views, a contribution concerning «the intuition of the world and the way of thinking, not merely analytical, concerning a particular doctrine [the theory of value], albeit an essential one?». Sraffa's reply, as we know, is elusive. He pleads inability to provide an answer, asks for clarification, and promises further inquiries. The exchange of letters on these matters would end here. But just what were the problems that originated Gramsci's question? And how did Gramsci's questions reverberate in Sraffa's subsequent theoretical development? Trough the Prison Notebooks and the paper left by Sraffa, as well as from his work published in 1960, it is possible to attempt a reconstruction of the intellectual paths taken by the two authors and discover unexpected convergences, as well as obvious differences. The key concept employed here is that of the "translatability of scientific languages", a term that Gramsci inherited from Lenin and expanded in a plurality of directions. From this extension, Boothman has argued, stems the "open" character of Gramsci's Marxism. The theme of the translatability of languages is also present in Sraffa: in a Note written shortly after the important theoretical turning point of the summer of 1927, he states his intention to write a book that will consist in the translation of Marx into English, that is in the translation of the "metaphysics" of Hegel into that of David Hume. It can be shown that issues that have a prominent importance in Gramsci's thought, such as the interpretation of Marx'a theory as a "philosophy of praxis", the problem of historical causality in social systems, the historical subjectivity of social groups, the relationship between history, political thought and political economy, help us to understand the meaning and the importance of Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Il Cannocchiale], relazioni_identificativo=[IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0019380], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[], relazioni_numero_issue=[], relazioni_start=[195], relazioni_end=[242], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[], relazioni_tipo_data=[], relazioni_luogo=[], relazioni_editore=[], relazioni_paese=[IT], soggettivoc=[Sraffa, Piero, Marx, Karl], subjectvoc=[Sraffa, Piero, Marx, Karl], note_riservate=, source=, recordInfo=francescogiasi@libero.it, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0019386, recordOrigin=MODS.2CB336AA3E21121, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=}]
Gramsci does not explicitly mention Spinoza in his own writings: yet a number of scholars have highlighted several similarities between their thought, particularly related to their shared view of radical immanentism. Spinoza was carefully studied by the young Marx as well. The latter produced an extract from Spinoza's Tractatus theologico-politicus where he tried to focus on the democratic instances of the work by abridging all theological references. Such a behaviour shows interesting similarities, and surprising indeed, with the way Gramsci behaved in his Quaderni di traduzioni, particularly when dealing with brothers Grimm's fairy tales (i.e. he abridged excerpts about religion) and with an anthology of texts by Marx himself (i.e. the way he cut off or moved some passages).

Notebooks), he filled four other notebooks with translations (mainly from German, but also from Russian
and some exercises from English); he also then included some translations from Marx in Notebook 7 in
particular. In the translation notebooks we see him as an "apprentice translator", certainly, but also note his
overall approach to problems that are the constant preoccupation of translation scholars, his translations of
the collection of folk tales collected by the Brothers Grimm being a case in point. Among other texts
translated are a volume on historical linguistics and the 1927 number of "Die literarische Welt" on the new
school of American social fiction, exemplifying the growing strata of United States intellectuals. The
nineteenth-century Russian classics also aroused his interest for their link with and input into social ferment
that was then beginning to grow in that country. Thus the link with some of the themes and subjects of what
all regard as his major work and interests emerges clearly in these hitherto rather neglected notebooks., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Readings and Applications of Gramsci / The National Edition of Gramsci's Writings], relazioni_identificativo=[IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0021405], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[2], relazioni_numero_issue=[4], relazioni_start=[], relazioni_end=[], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[], relazioni_tipo_data=[], relazioni_luogo=[], relazioni_editore=[], relazioni_paese=[], soggettivoc=[Marx, Karl, Letteratura Americana, Linguistica, Traducibilità], subjectvoc=[Marx, Karl, Literature 20th Century Usa, Linguistic, translatability], note_riservate=, source=, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0021383, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=, dateIssued=}]
