This is a new approach to one of the greatest political theorists, Antonio Gramsci. Gramsci's Prison Notebooks are one of the most popular Marxist texts available and continue to inspire readers across the world. In Using Gramsci, Michele Filippini proposes a new approach based on the analysis of previously ignored concepts in his works, creating a book which stands apart. Including chapters on ideology, the individual, collective organisms, society, crisis and temporality, Using Gramsci offers a new pattern in Gramscian studies aimed to speak to the broader audience of social sciences scholars. The tools that are provided in this book extend the uses of Gramsci beyond the field of political theory and Marxism, while remaining firmly rooted in his writings. Working from the original Italian texts, Filippini also examines the more traditional areas of Gramsci's thought, including hegemony, organic intellectuals and civil society. This book will be perfect for scholars and students of Gramsci's thought, whether they are experts, or coming to his ideas for the first time.

This issue of «Laboratoire italien» reports on the current state of the research on Gramsci in Italy. From the point of view of their subject matter, the contributions collected in this issue can be divided into two main areas, which ultimately feed on each other: the editions, on the one hand, and on the other, the critical studies. The first section hosts contributions on the new editions, framed in the project - started in 1990 and still in progress - of the the Edizione nazionale degli scritti di Antonio Gramsci. In particular, it gathers essays on the new editions of the Prison Notebooks, the Writings 1910-1926 and the Correspondence. These articles give an account of the innovations - both in the method and content - that these new editions have produced. The section opens with an extensive essay by Gianni Francioni who studies the way Gramsci worked through the manuscript of the Notebooks, revealing its structure and diachronic features in the light of the latest philological findings. The second section collects studies on certain issues and concepts previously neglected, and that in the last two decades are emerging as crucial: pragmatism, linguistics, the interpretation of fascism, of corporatism and post-liberal societies, the category of "translatability", the relationship with Vico's philosophy. The issue is concluded (third section) by Giuseppe Vacca with a comprehensive overview of the most significant interpretations of Gramsci in Italy in recent years.
This paper compares two Marxist interpretations of Machiavelli in order to better understand why, twice over, Marxists have returned to Machiavelli. I argue that Antonio Gramsci and Louis Althusser, the authors of the interpretations discussed here, both find resources in Machiavelli's work for the development of a non-deterministic Marxism that emphasises the role of political practice in enacting transitions between social forms.

In particular, while the force-consensus approach may indeed be relevant in examining relations among the Western countries, it is fundamentally wanting when applied to the third world. The two main reasons concern the persistent violence against the third world, and the dominance of race and racism as social forces in the production and maintenance of successive world orders. Gramsci argued that the war of manoeuvre, the direct assault against the state, was no longer relevant for revolutionary strategy in the capitalist core. Instead, political strategy must take the form of a war of manoeuvre, a protracted political-cultural struggle against the hegemonic power of the ruling class which Gramsci likened to siege warfare. A review of the history of siege warfare has two important conclusions relevant for a Gramscian political strategy: (a) the relative balance of forces in favour of the defence can be overcome, but this requires an understanding by a besieging force of the weakest point of defence; and (b) siege and assault are not alternatives but are inseparable in that, the success of a besieging force is predicated on the real or perceived threat of assault against defenders. These conclusions, in turn suggest that (a) political siege warfare cannot be a decentralised multiplicity of struggles but instead requires some form of leadership that coordinates the forces laying siege to the ruling class, and (b) a political war of position cannot postpone consideration of the war of manoeuvre into the future, but rather must be informed by the strategic questions more commonly associated with that form of political strategy., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Critique - Journal of Socialist Theory], relazioni_identificativo=[], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[44], relazioni_numero_issue=[4], relazioni_start=[435], relazioni_end=[450], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[2016], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20160101-20161231], relazioni_tipo_data=[], relazioni_luogo=[], relazioni_editore=[Routledge], relazioni_paese=[], soggettivoc=[Guerra Di Posizione, Rivoluzione], subjectvoc=[War of Position, Revolution], note_riservate=, source=, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0020687, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20160101-20161231}]

impact upon both his personal and political lives, constituting a fundamental 'turning
point' in his maturation as a person and political leader. Drawing upon archival research,
this paper aims to reconstruct key moments in the dialogue between Gramsci,
the Bolshevik leadership and the wider experiences of the Russian Revolution in 1922-
3. It focuses in particular upon the importance of this period for the emergence of a
distinctive notion of hegemony as a central dimension of Gramsci's political thought
and practice. While Gramsci's earlier writings tended to utilise a received meaning of
hegemony as a form of political power, the 'svolta di Mosca' produced a greater emphasis
upon hegemony as a concrete 'method of political work'. It was in Moscow in
1922-3 that Gramsci discovered the concrete forms of what he had earlier called the
'vivifying thought' 'immanent' to both Das Kapital and the Russian Revolution. His distinctive
elaboration of the notion of hegemony in subsequent years represents a concentration
and critical elaboration of these intense experiences.
quella esperienza così intensa., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Gramsciana], relazioni_identificativo=[], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[3], relazioni_numero_issue=[], relazioni_start=[], relazioni_end=[], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[2016], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20160101-20161231], relazioni_tipo_data=[], relazioni_luogo=[Modena], relazioni_editore=[Mucchi], relazioni_paese=[IT], soggettivoc=[Rivoluzione permanente, Giacobinismo, Egemonia], subjectvoc=[Revolution, Jacobinism, Hegemony], note_riservate=, source=, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0021307, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=, dateIssued=20160101-20161231}]

it took six weeks for any official communications to reach Moscow from the Italian
executive. When the two reports arrived, they contradicted each other. The Comintern,
startled, expressed doubts about the capability and political direction of the PCd'I.
Gramsci reported, "Everyone was in agreement in insisting that the problem was not
one of organization but of politics" The Comintern's verdict on the state of the Party
had confirmed Gramsci's own views on what was wrong with the PCd'I under Bordiga.
The separation between the leaders, the Party and the class would have to be bridged.
The rigidity of the organizational structures meant that the Party could not react to
changing circumstances and differing objectives. Bordiga's refusal to work with other
groups continued to limit Party growth. It was time to rethink the ethos and to change
the direction of the Party, not only to comply with the Comintern United Front, but
in order to survive. The Comintern then sent Gramsci to Vienna to support the Italian
Party, and in the hope that he would take over the leadership; a difficult task, given
Bordiga's popularity and the fact that this change would have to be accomplished from
a distance by letter. In this article, I consider how Gramsci achieved this; his methodology
of coaching his colleagues by correspondence. Examined in detail, what emerges
is a masterclass in distance learning.
obiettivi diversi.
Esaminato in dettaglio, ciò
che emerge è una lezione magistrale di apprendimento a distanza., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Gramsciana], relazioni_identificativo=[], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[3], relazioni_numero_issue=[], relazioni_start=[], relazioni_end=[], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[2016], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20160101-20161231], relazioni_tipo_data=[], relazioni_luogo=[Modena], relazioni_editore=[Mucchi], relazioni_paese=[IT], soggettivoc=[Autonomia, Ideologia, Leadership, Educazione], subjectvoc=[Autonomy, Ideology, Leadership, Education], note_riservate=, source=, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0021309, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=, dateIssued=20160101-20161231}]

This paper provides a list and a brief description of files and documents where the name of Piero Sraffa is mentioned currently kept at the Archivio Centrale dello Stato and at the Archivio Storico Diplomatico. For each file or document we provide indication of the reference number where it is conserved and a transcript of one or two of the relevant documents out of more than five hundred which have been located. The purpose of the paper is to illustrate the results of archival researches of the last decade, including more recent findings, and furnish a groundwork for further research, which may bring further light to bear on documents already known to us, and lead to the discovery of new documents or information, so as to provide a better basis to the reconstruction of the biography of Piero Sraffa and of people whose lives entwined with his - Antonio Gramsci certainly ranking high among them. Given the nature of this work, providing precise indications as to the exact location of the documents is crucial, and this implies that any such indication must be presented in Italian. Furthermore, as almost all the documents considered were written in Italian, also providing quotations in the original language seemed to us of special importance. For these reasons, we have asked the editors of this series of working papers - usually available only in English - to allow us to present our work also in Italian. This article introduces the concept "ideological contention" into the study of social movements and demonstrates the concept through an analysis of the relationship between race and mobilization in modern national contexts. The analysis links the emergence of scientific racism to the period of large nation state consolidation and the development of liberal political ideologies across Western nations. The paper demonstrates that movement struggles within the context of a national ideological framework impact the organization, process of ideological elaboration, and strategic choices a movement makes. I explore how ideology organizes, coordinates, and mobilizes movement members in political processes through a study of Sardinian worker, peasant, and communist struggles in the context of a modernized and industrialized Italy (1917-1920). I argue that reevaluating the theoretical and empirical relationship between ideology and the frame perspective could strengthen analyses of social movement struggles.

In this work, Marcos Del Roio analyses Gramsci's pre-prison political-theoretical activity in light of a radical thesis: that throughout Gramsci's life we see a total continuity between his political praxis and his philosophical reflection. That is not to ignore the changes, turns, and even fractures in the Sardinian communist's thinking across his brief but rich existence. On the contrary. Reading Gramsci, we find key ideas that set the rhythm of all of his thought, at least from the time of the Turin factory councils up till the writing of his final notebooks. These ideas also established the essential identity of his thinking, throughout (and over and above) the diversity of its manifestations: just as we typically find in all great thinkers. This book's title, referring to the metaphor of a ray of light passing through a prism, expresses this counterpoint between identity and diversity. The main category we find in the subtitle speaks to this same problematic, considered in the context of Gramsci's political action and the radical Leninism that guided him in his victorious battle with Bordiga: the 'united front'. This political formula was coined in Germany in 1921 and was central to the late Lenin's thinking, and in this work Del Roio shows its various different interpretations as the basis for analysing Gramsci's own position in this regard. I first express some doubts as to whether an awful lot can and should be expected from yet another new approach to the study of international law; earlier approaches widely heralded have quietly disappeared from sight, sometimes without leaving much trace. Subsequently, I discuss the extent to which the new international legal realism conceptualizes its notion of empirical reality, followed by a discussion on which interests the new insights spawned by new legal realism are to serve., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=, relazioni_titolo_collegato=[Leiden Journal of International Law], relazioni_identificativo=[], relazioni_tipo_relazione=[padre], relazioni_numero_volume=[28], relazioni_numero_issue=[3], relazioni_start=[469], relazioni_end=[478], relazioni_pagine=[], relazioni_forma_visualizzata=[September 2015], relazioni_forma_normalizzata=[20150901-20150931], relazioni_tipo_data=[], relazioni_luogo=[Cambridge], relazioni_editore=[Cambridge University Press], relazioni_paese=[GB], note_riservate=, source=ProQuest, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0020710, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20150901-20150931}]

Drawing on a rich historical framework, this book traces the different definitions and interpretations of hegemony in world politics and shows that the term continues to be a contested one. It examines and develops traditional ideas about hegemony - from the idea of the strong leading state to the dominance of particular ideologies - through a wide range of approaches including hegemonic stability theory and the work of Antonio Gramsci.
Exploring issues such as the role of the state, the changing influence of regionalism and the emergence of counter-hegemonic movements, this book argues that a more nuanced understanding of hegemony is necessary in order to understand the construction of the contemporary world order. Considering a wide range of case studies throughout - from the reputation of the United States as an international leader, to the European Union's regional hegemony and the economic prowess of the so-called BRICS group - this text provides the ideal guide to a multi-faceted term and significant force of both history and the modern age., table_contents=1.
