After having outlined the editorial vicissitudes of the "Notebooks" in their first publication in thematic form to the new critical edition now being completed, the essay deals with the specific nature of Gramsci's prison writing, whose full understanding is a necessary condition for capturing the author's "rhythm of thought". Some of these peculiarities were imposed by prison condition, while others stem from "rules" that were followed more or less consciously by the prisoner (some continuously, others only in certain phases of the writing) in writing down his annotations. The study of this behaviour, together with a minute analysis of the prison notebooks in their physical nature (covers, interventions by the prison authorities, handwriting and so on) has provided a notable quantity of indirect dating elements which, together with Gramsci's (few) direct indications, has allowed an ever more precise reconstruction of the chronology of the individual notebooks and of the blocks of notes that comprise them. Furthermore, the composite nature of Gramsci's manuscripts has clearly emerged: these may (with some approximation, because of the presence of some "mixed" notebooks) be divided into translation notebooks, miscellaneous notebooks and special notebooks. The new critical edition, by devoting one volume (divided in turn into more than one part) to each of these three typologies of notebooks, proposes to restore in the most faithful way possible this essential characteristic of the prison work.
The essay consists of two parts, dealing respectively with the use of the concept hegemony before and within Gramsci's prison writings. The first part attempts to reconstruct a sort of "prehistory" of the term, from its Greek origin to the long eclipse in Roman times, in the middle Ages and in early modernity. I then go on to its nineteenth-century revival, first in the political vocabulary of the promoters of Italian and German national unity, and then in the Marxist debate of the Second International. But it is among the Bolsheviks that the concept took on that pregnant meaning which Gramsci began to reflect on during his stay in Moscow (1922-23), then in the period in Vienna (1923-24) and above all after his return to Italy (1924-26). The second part of the essay attempts to trace diachronically the developments of the reflection on hegemony in the Notebooks, in which the particular meanings of "political hegemony" and "civil hegemony" emerge, no longer referring solely to the proletariat but to any social class or group fighting to conquer and / or maintain power. This struggle takes place predominantly on the terrain of civil society and as protagonists sees individuals (the intellectuals), public and private institutions, and parties (the modern Prince), in an inextricable nexus between national and supranational realities. The outcome of Gramsci's reflections constitutes a free and bold translation of Lenin's original concept of hegemony which, moreover, he maintains is already present in embryo in the historical writings of Marx.

This is a new approach to one of the greatest political theorists, Antonio Gramsci. Gramsci's Prison Notebooks are one of the most popular Marxist texts available and continue to inspire readers across the world. In Using Gramsci, Michele Filippini proposes a new approach based on the analysis of previously ignored concepts in his works, creating a book which stands apart. Including chapters on ideology, the individual, collective organisms, society, crisis and temporality, Using Gramsci offers a new pattern in Gramscian studies aimed to speak to the broader audience of social sciences scholars. The tools that are provided in this book extend the uses of Gramsci beyond the field of political theory and Marxism, while remaining firmly rooted in his writings. Working from the original Italian texts, Filippini also examines the more traditional areas of Gramsci's thought, including hegemony, organic intellectuals and civil society. This book will be perfect for scholars and students of Gramsci's thought, whether they are experts, or coming to his ideas for the first time.

Aim of the present essay is to track different epochs of hegemony in the history of the modern State. In the first chapter, a very peculiar although rarely studied aspect of Gramsci's method is retrieved, i.e. the semantic expansion of all the terms denoting functions involved in the concrete working of hegemony. It will be shown that this expansion is necessary to understand the role played by the public « organisational » and « connective » functions taking place within the private sphere of the « civil society ». The second chapter introduces two (not entirely distinguishable) main phases of hegemony, represented, respectively, by the predominance of « mobilisation » and of « control ». The consequence of the trend from the first to the second phase is the gradual weakening of the separation between « public » and « private ». With regard to the government of the subaltern classes, this trend means that « control » becomes more important in relation to « mobilisation », and bourgeois power is pushed towards the experimentation of new forms of proximity - not merely repressive but ideological - to the masses of the subalterns.

This issue of «Laboratoire italien» reports on the current state of the research on Gramsci in Italy. From the point of view of their subject matter, the contributions collected in this issue can be divided into two main areas, which ultimately feed on each other: the editions, on the one hand, and on the other, the critical studies. The first section hosts contributions on the new editions, framed in the project - started in 1990 and still in progress - of the the Edizione nazionale degli scritti di Antonio Gramsci. In particular, it gathers essays on the new editions of the Prison Notebooks, the Writings 1910-1926 and the Correspondence. These articles give an account of the innovations - both in the method and content - that these new editions have produced. The section opens with an extensive essay by Gianni Francioni who studies the way Gramsci worked through the manuscript of the Notebooks, revealing its structure and diachronic features in the light of the latest philological findings. The second section collects studies on certain issues and concepts previously neglected, and that in the last two decades are emerging as crucial: pragmatism, linguistics, the interpretation of fascism, of corporatism and post-liberal societies, the category of "translatability", the relationship with Vico's philosophy. The issue is concluded (third section) by Giuseppe Vacca with a comprehensive overview of the most significant interpretations of Gramsci in Italy in recent years.
After having traced the publishing history of the Notebooks, from their first edition in thematic form to the new critical edition presently being completed, the essay then deals with the peculiarities of Gramsci's prison writing, a full understanding of which is necessary in order to capture the author's "rhythm of thought". Some of these peculiarities - starting with the use of school notebooks, rather than notepads or single sheets, as writing material - were imposed by prison conditions, while others stem from "rules" which he followed more or less knowingly (some continually and others only in certain phases of his work) in writing the notes. The study of this behaviour, together with a minute analysis of the physical nature of the prison notebooks (covers, interventions by the prison authorities, handwriting and so on) has provided a notable quantity of indirect dating elements which, together with Gramsci's (sparse) direct indications, has allowed us to reconstruct with ever greater precision the chronology of the individual notebooks and the blocks of notes they contain. The composite nature of Gramsci's manuscripts has also emerged quite clearly, manuscripts which may be divided (with some approximation, due to the presence of "mixed notebooks", into notebooks devoted to translation, miscellaneous notebooks and special ones. The new critical edition, devoting one volume (in its turn divided into different books) to each of these three typologies of notebook, aims at the most faithful restoration possible of this essential aspect of the prison work.

Gramsci's prison manuscripts were published, first in a partial form according to subject matter, by Felice Platone and then, in a complete form in chronological order by Valentino Gerratana, with the exception of the translations that Gramsci did between 1929 and 1932. Beginning with L'officina gramsciana (The Gramscian Workshop), Gianni Francioni has carried forward and corrected the work of philological restoration undertaken by Gerratana, arriving at a formulation of the basic criteria for a new publication of the Prison Notebooks within the context of the National Edition of Gramsci's writings. The first volume of the National Edition came out in 2007 and included the Translation Notebooks, of interest for the nexus that emerges with the theoretical notes. The second and third volume, currently underway, will be deal with the miscellaneous notebooks and the "special" ones, arranged in order of writing according to the new chronology that Francioni has established, contained here as an appendix.

The present contribution brings into focus the nexus between self-censorship and political analysis of the world as it was at the time of the Prison Notebooks. After a brief presentation of the way in which self-censorship has been evaluated and analysed in the studies and editions of Gramsci, we attempt to reconstruct a number of segments of the Notebooks, in which Gramsci carries out critical analyses of the world of the time in connection with a political project of a thoroughgoing redefinition of the PCI's political strategy. The point to which we direct most attention is that group of processes that, briefly and somewhat conventionally Gramsci defines as "Americanism and Fordism". We demonstrate the nexus between this group of phenomena and his investigation of the crisis and the transformation of parliamentarism, that is to say of the emergence of a "corporative" society, even outside fascist Italy, and of the appearance of a new form of politics, in which the masses are completely organized and actively present within the organizations created by the State in order to control them.
