This essay is devoted to Gramsci's reflection in his Prison Notebooks on language discourse and on languages; its aim is to show how this reflection constituted one of Gramsci's main contributions to Marxism, which up to that time had not had an autonomous theory of language discourse. In this, particular importance is assumed by the notion of translatability, developed in an original direction in the Notebooks. The essay therefore deals with the two most immediate premises of Gramsci's reflections. The first of them is constituted by the debate on language and nationalities in the revolutionary Russia of the 1920s, in relation to the new federal set-up of the soviet State and to the start of anti-illiteracy campaigns. The second premise is constituted by the thought of Antonio Labriola who, while not having been able to provide any personal contribution to linguistic thought, had shown great interest in this subject, which he knew above all through the writings of Wilhelm von Humboldt and Heymann Steinthal.

The article examines the main categories and lines of analysis developed by Gramsci in his analysis of fascism. In order to fully understand fascism's particular characteristics, he developed a reading that brought into play a more general interpretation of the history of Italy and the processes of transformation typical of the capitalist societies of his time. This consisted in an analytical apparatus that evolved over time, with the change in Gramsci's conditions of existence and degree of political involvement, and with the different successive phases of the fascist movement and the dictatorship. The article examines his whole political and intellectual itinerary, with special reference to the reflection carried out during his detention and written down in the Prison Notebooks. The categories that Gramsci developed in this phase are grouped around three clusters of problems which in some cases take up again suggestions and traces of analyses sketched out previously: social classes and historical periods, forms of command (a subject connected with the reflection on "caesarism"-"bonapartism" and on the intellectuals), and "passive revolution" and the nexuses with the changes in capitalism and Fordist modernization.

The present contribution brings into focus the nexus between self-censorship and political analysis of the world as it was at the time of the Prison Notebooks. After a brief presentation of the way in which self-censorship has been evaluated and analysed in the studies and editions of Gramsci, we attempt to reconstruct a number of segments of the Notebooks, in which Gramsci carries out critical analyses of the world of the time in connection with a political project of a thoroughgoing redefinition of the PCI's political strategy. The point to which we direct most attention is that group of processes that, briefly and somewhat conventionally Gramsci defines as "Americanism and Fordism". We demonstrate the nexus between this group of phenomena and his investigation of the crisis and the transformation of parliamentarism, that is to say of the emergence of a "corporative" society, even outside fascist Italy, and of the appearance of a new form of politics, in which the masses are completely organized and actively present within the organizations created by the State in order to control them.

We here do not simply take note of the conceptual relations, even if they may seem striking to those who know the two thinkers, but we single out the particular conditions of Gramsci's understanding of Vico, studying in particular the complexity of how Vico's thought became widespread in nineteenth-century Italy.

The article offers a "wide-angle lens" view of the most recent discussions on Gramsci in Italy and shows how their publication of new documents, or new editions of already-known documents, has been intertwined with critical discussion. Albeit with many interpretative oscillations and divergences, a common aspect characterizes this discussion, which may be summed up in two points, namely method and merit. Regarding the first of these, diachrony comes to the fore as the sine qua non for understanding Gramsci's thought at each moment of his life. On the second point - the questions of merit - we show, in agreement with the first point, how all the contributions examined, as the red thread that runs through them, take account of the fact that Gramsci was above all else a practising, active politician, and only in so far as he was such was he also a theoretician of politics. We thus succeed in grasping the originality of the personality and thought of Gramsci, and avoid falling into the types of "academic" reconstruction - very widespread up to the 1980s - which resolved this thought and this personality into the "sum" of their "sources". Gramsci is thereby restored to the history of his party, but at the same time the fact emerges that his legacy goes beyond that tradition and belongs to the whole of Italian culture.

Sergio Luzzatto's Partigia. Una storia della Resistenza was first published in Italy in 2013. The aim of this microhistorical study was to reconstruct the events surrounding the execution, as a disciplinary measure, of two unruly partisans belonging to the same resistance group as Primo Levi. In 2016, the French edition of the work was published together with a lengthy afterword by Luzzatto aimed at responding to the criticism waged against his work. This article seeks to demonstrate Luzzatto's failure to consider the historical context surrounding the execution when identifying it as the source of deep-seated guilt in Levi. In fact, Luzzatto offers no evidence to support his claims; instead, he seeks to cover up this void by presenting himself as a key player in the search for the "truth" and thereby creating a special pact with the reader. In the end, the afterword to the French edition fails to fully address the criticism, and it adds very little to what is already known about Primo Levi's life and thinking. On the one hand, scholars and intellectuals in phase with the "anarchist moment" characteristic of recent upsurges and struggles tend to regard Gramsci as an old-fashioned and totalitarian Marxist, due to his insistence on the necessity of building a new hegemony. On the other hand, certain radical theorists focus on the possibility of using Gramsci's theories as a tool for devising new forms of popular resistance and subaltern politics. The article argues that both positions rely on a partial understanding of Gramsci's dialectical categories, hegemony/subaltern, political society/ civil society. The article focuses on the renewal of Gramscian studies in Italy. It begins with a presentation of the criteria adopted for the new national edition of the complete writings of Antonio Gramsci, drawing on the significant philological progress made possible by the research of G. Francioni. It goes on to discuss recent historiography, based in particular on Soviet archives: these have enabled researchers to arrive at a better understanding of Gramsci's intellectual path during his formative years and the question of his links, when he was in prison, with the Italian party and with the International. It also draws on the studies carried out in the field of historical semantics on Gramsci's language (in particular the Dizionario gramsciano) and on some of the most important theoretical works (notably those of G. Cospito and F. Frosini) which are grounded in current philological, semantic and historical research. A diachronic reading of the Quaderni, in which the writings are linked to the concrete political situations out of which they emerged, is now possible, and it may help us to understand better how Gramsci's singular and innovative thinking can still be useful in the 21st century.

However the remarks also open up other potential paths leading into the heart of the philosophy of praxis, with its focus on the necessary and possible development of a "collective name", intimately associated with the development of a "singular noun". Drawing on contemporary research on immigration policy and on immigrant mobilizations, as well as the political philosophy of Antonio Gramsci (in particular, the concept of hegemony), it is possible to understand the U.S. immigration regime as an unstable but functional synthesis of partially contradictory political demands formulated by economic and political elites, determined opponents of mass immigration and by immigrants themselves. Unequally satisfactory to these different parties, such a synthesis nonetheless favors their consent to a common policy, which maintains a large immigrant population with limited rights but who are disposed to wait.
