Special issue of Rethinking Marxism on "Marxism And Spirituality"

The purpose of this essay is to reconstruct the relationship between subalterns, religion, and philosophy in Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks. With the birth of mass society—that is, with the entry onto the political scene of the popular masses, and above all of the peasantry—politics entered directly into relation with irrational passions bound up with the religious mentality, and hegemony was constructed not thanks to the institution of a "filter" for the passions (as was the parliament of "notables") but through the mastering of those "passions" using forms of Caesarist and charismatic democracy. In Gramsci's view, the political action of the subaltern classes had to confront this new form of hegemony by recognizing the value of the profound content of religious ideas (which always indicate the need for a unification of theory and practice) and by working on a "translation" of those ideas into the forms of self-organization and self-emancipation.

In "Marxism And Spirituality", a special issue of Rethinking Marxism. When discussing the plight of subaltern groups, scholars often underline the economic and material troubles suffered by "the poor" through the perpetration of unjust exploitation, unequal distribution of wealth, and more generally, their being subjected to abuse and violence. This narrative frequently includes the means put in place by subalterns to regain a share of power, but the idea of "inner life" or "spirituality" has hardly been considered as part of the process through which subalterns express their agency so as to attain recognition of their "full humanity." A closer analysis of Gramsci's Notebook 11 and other works, however, highlights the relevance of an innovative, transforming, and immanent "spirituality" that necessarily reflects the historical experience of subaltern groups. This is further emphasized by the writings and activity of the Dalit leader B. R. Ambedkar.

In order to adequately deal with Gramsci's view of education, we can't remove the constitutive link of this theme with another issue, so crucial for him: the question of hegemony. We need therefore to quote the original debate that, in the second half of the Twentieth century, fixed the crucial importance of this term. But we need also to pursue our analysis of Gramsci's work in a rigorous diachronic perspective, looking at the whole evolution and route of his thought. Only in this way we can avoid partial interpretations of the question of hegemony. A partiality that fails the authentic perspective of Gramsci's pedagogy: emancipation, in a strong and universal sense that is strictly linked to philosophy of praxis.

Specifically, it features some results of a network analysis conducted on a large corpus of bibliographic data assembled in the Gramscian Bibliography (BG), an electronic data base created and managed by the Fondazione Istituto Gramsci in Rome. The logic beneath the article is twofold: on the one side, it is an exercise in describing and measuring the global spread of an author on whose reception has been collected a large amount of data following a more traditional approach in the history of ideas (e.g. the reception of Gramsci in English, or his reception in France); on the other side, the article attempts to test, focusing on a strategic case study, a new methodological tool useful for mapping the international circulation of concepts across different languages. After having outlined the editorial vicissitudes of the "Notebooks" in their first publication in thematic form to the new critical edition now being completed, the essay deals with the specific nature of Gramsci's prison writing, whose full understanding is a necessary condition for capturing the author's "rhythm of thought". Some of these peculiarities were imposed by prison condition, while others stem from "rules" that were followed more or less consciously by the prisoner (some continuously, others only in certain phases of the writing) in writing down his annotations. The study of this behaviour, together with a minute analysis of the prison notebooks in their physical nature (covers, interventions by the prison authorities, handwriting and so on) has provided a notable quantity of indirect dating elements which, together with Gramsci's (few) direct indications, has allowed an ever more precise reconstruction of the chronology of the individual notebooks and of the blocks of notes that comprise them. Furthermore, the composite nature of Gramsci's manuscripts has clearly emerged: these may (with some approximation, because of the presence of some "mixed" notebooks) be divided into translation notebooks, miscellaneous notebooks and special notebooks. The new critical edition, by devoting one volume (divided in turn into more than one part) to each of these three typologies of notebooks, proposes to restore in the most faithful way possible this essential characteristic of the prison work.

The essay consists of two parts, dealing respectively with the use of the concept hegemony before and within Gramsci's prison writings. The first part attempts to reconstruct a sort of "prehistory" of the term, from its Greek origin to the long eclipse in Roman times, in the middle Ages and in early modernity. I then go on to its nineteenth-century revival, first in the political vocabulary of the promoters of Italian and German national unity, and then in the Marxist debate of the Second International. But it is among the Bolsheviks that the concept took on that pregnant meaning which Gramsci began to reflect on during his stay in Moscow (1922-23), then in the period in Vienna (1923-24) and above all after his return to Italy (1924-26). The second part of the essay attempts to trace diachronically the developments of the reflection on hegemony in the Notebooks, in which the particular meanings of "political hegemony" and "civil hegemony" emerge, no longer referring solely to the proletariat but to any social class or group fighting to conquer and / or maintain power. This struggle takes place predominantly on the terrain of civil society and as protagonists sees individuals (the intellectuals), public and private institutions, and parties (the modern Prince), in an inextricable nexus between national and supranational realities. The outcome of Gramsci's reflections constitutes a free and bold translation of Lenin's original concept of hegemony which, moreover, he maintains is already present in embryo in the historical writings of Marx.

Gramsci is not, as at times has been said, the “theoretician of civil society”. Central to his reflections in the Prison Notebooks is instead the concept of the “integral State” or “extended State”, the dialectical union of State and civil society which allowed him to interpret the new social and political situation typical of much of the twentieth century. This new situation is characterized, on the one hand, by a new relationship between the economy and politics and, on the other, by the growing importance of the “apparatuses of consent” flanking the State’s traditional repressive apparatuses. For Gramsci the apparatuses of consent are sometimes public and sometimes apparently private but, in any case, their function is the same, namely to reinforce the hegemony of the dominant class, and to propagate a traditional common sense, thereby making it difficult to challenge the given set-ups of power. Since there has been a change in the State – the terrain of the struggle for power – the concept of revolution must also change: this is no longer an isolated insurrectionary event, as it was in the nineteenth century, but a long struggle for the conquest of “trenches and emplacements”, in other words the conquest of the centres that produce and extend consent.
