From the struggles of the urban poor in Gujarat to the activism of sexual subalterns in eastern India and the mobilization of artisanal fishing communities in Tamil Nadu, the essays in this volume cover a diverse range of ongoing struggles against dispossession, disenfranchisement, and stigma that are unfolding in neoliberal India.
The volume analyses the forms of collective agency that subaltern groups develop to negotiate with the workings of power from above. Foregrounding the imaginative, affective, and secular dimensions of subaltern agency, New Subaltern Politics interrogates the current relevance of Gramscian concepts of hegemony, subalternity, and the integral state in the contemporary Indian context. Bringing together path-breaking methodological and conceptual interventions in the study of subaltern politics, this volume will be invaluable to all those engagedaas academics or as activists--in the struggle against unjust societies and unequal developmental trajectories., table_contents=, titolo_collana=, collocazione=FIG: G. 878, soggettivoc=[India, Egemonia], subjectvoc=[India, Hegemony], note_riservate=ISBN - 9780199457557, source=, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0020375, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20150101-20151231}]

This review examines a collection of essays that engage with the thought of Antonio Gramsci in relation to the postcolonial. I argue that some of the chapters display a symptomatic tendency to read into Gramsci's concepts a moral charge that detracts from their theoretical value, and that on the whole here Gramsci is either read in a post- Marxist key or dismissed as inoperable for the globalised postcolony of the present.

Among the left forces in Japan since over fifty years, this issue has been one of
serious arguments according to which philosophically Gramsci may be idealist or at
least has a tendency to fall into idealism. Nevertheless, there exists a similarity or convergence
in reading Hegel's concept of dialectic relationship of idealism and materialism
among Marx, Lenin and Gramsci, even if neither Lenin nor Gramsci could ever
read Marx's 1844 manuscripts. It could be presumed that Gramsci would have a magnificent
idea or ambition to reconstruct or «deconstruct» a lifeless Marxist philosophy
through the sublation (Aufhebung) of traditional antagonistic relationship between
materialism and idealism into the «Philosophia della Prassi». This is only a hypothesis,
but one to be further developed.

This paper explores the methodological relevance of the culture concept for the study of poverty by cultural sociologists, Oscar Lewis, and Antonio Gramsci. Cultural sociologists currently dominate poverty studies in America and focus on the relationship of culture and poverty. Oscar Lewis's idea of the culture of poverty influenced poverty studies by anthropologists in the 1960s. In the early twentieth century Antonio Gramsci argued that culture could serve as a revolutionary force to subvert the domination of the proletariat by the capitalist bourgeoisie. After exploring the political presumptions of each view point I evaluate their ideas against data from a field study of a community action council in America's 1960s war on poverty. Reprinted by permission of Sage Publications Ltd
This paper deals with aspects of Antonio Gramsci’s thinking on education and related cultural work, highlighting issues such as those of effective curricula, different forms of educators/intellectuals, work-oriented education and popular education, which have resonance with contemporary debates in the field. Gramsci’s ideas provide insights for an effective contemporary socialist pedagogical politics that are based on the principle of critical access to ‘powerful knowledge’ and experiences that promote critical thinking, in formal educational institutions and other learning settings.

Through the Prison Notebooks and the papers left by Sraffa, it is possible to attempt a reconstruction of the intellectual paths taken by the two authors and discover unexpected convergences, as well as obvious differences. The key concept employed here is that of the 'translatability of scientific languages'. From this concept, Boothman has argued, stems the ‘open' character of Gramsci's Marxism. The theme of the translatability of languages is also present in Sraffa: in a Note written after the important theoretical turning point of the summer of 1927, he states his intention to write a book that will consist in the translation of Marx into English, that is in the translation of the ‘metaphysics' of Hegel into that of Hume. It can be shown that issues that have a prominent importance in Gramsci's thought help us to understand the meaning and importance of Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities.
