With ANew Preface and Annexe: Athos Lisa's Report
"A major essay on the thought of the great Italian Marxist An explosive analysis of the central strategic concepts in the thought of the great Italian Marxist, Anderson's essay has been the subject of book-length attacks across four decades for its disentangling of the hesitations and contradictions in Gramsci's highly original usage of such key dichotomies as East and West, domination and direction, hegemony and dictatorship, state and civil society, war of position and war of movement. In a critical tribute to the international richness of Gramsci's work, it shows how deeply embedded these notions were in the revolutionary debates in Tsarist Russia and Wilhemine Germany, in which arguments criss-crossed between Plekhanov, Lenin, Kautsky, Luxemburg, Lukacs and Trotsky, with contemporary echoes in Brecht and Benjamin. A new preface considers the objections this account of Gramsci provoked and the reasons for them"-- Provided by publisher., table_contents=

This contribution investigates the presence in Gramsci's work of the family of terms relating to "subaltern", with particular attention being paid to the prison writings. The term itself, of military origin, was widespread in political and journalistic reflections before the First World War; there are numerous very well-known examples of its use in Gramsci, first as an adjective, and then as a noun. It designates both the most marginal classes and the bloc of forces grouped around the "fundamental" revolutionary class, namely the working class, which at least potentially struggles for hegemony. The semantic ambivalence is not without its problems, but this probably lies at the base of the term's current popularity. In Gramsci, moreover, the term (or family of terms) undergoes further expansions in meaning, passing on to designate - during his ongoing prison reflections - not only classes and social groups, but also individuals and the characteristics of their being in relation to others. And in including ever more cultural and not just social or socio-cultural characteristics, it almost always has a clearly negative meaning when compared with the positive "hegemonic" pole.
The article offers a "wide-angle lens" view of the most recent discussions on Gramsci in Italy and shows how their publication of new documents, or new editions of already-known documents, has been intertwined with critical discussion. Albeit with many interpretative oscillations and divergences, a common aspect characterizes this discussion, which may be summed up in two points, namely method and merit. Regarding the first of these, diachrony comes to the fore as the sine qua non for understanding Gramsci's thought at each moment of his life. On the second point - the questions of merit - we show, in agreement with the first point, how all the contributions examined, as the red thread that runs through them, take account of the fact that Gramsci was above all else a practising, active politician, and only in so far as he was such was he also a theoretician of politics. We thus succeed in grasping the originality of the personality and thought of Gramsci, and avoid falling into the types of "academic" reconstruction - very widespread up to the 1980s - which resolved this thought and this personality into the "sum" of their "sources". Gramsci is thereby restored to the history of his party, but at the same time the fact emerges that his legacy goes beyond that tradition and belongs to the whole of Italian culture.
This article provides an account of Antonio Gramsci’s impact on the area of critical pedagogy. It indicates the Gramscian influence on the thinking of major exponents of the field. It foregrounds Gramsci’s ideas and then indicates how they have been taken up by a selection of critical pedagogy exponents who were chosen on the strength of their identification and engagement with Gramsci’s ideas, some of them even having written entire essays on Gramsci. The article concludes with a discussion concerning an aspect of Gramsci’s concerns, the question of powerful knowledge, which, in the present author’s view, provides a formidable challenge to critical pedagogues.

Although they worked in different fields of social interpretation, Antonio Gramsci and Vilfredo Pareto are both part of a Machiavellian tradition of political studies that carries with itself considerable thematic continuities and affinities in the overall formulation of political concepts. This is especially visible with regard to the two main topics examined in this article: the methodology of political science and the distinction between the governed and those who govern. Pareto proposes a science that is free from fictional ideals, founded on empirical, historical observation. Gramsci, on the other hand, thought that a political science could not but be founded on the understanding that any social theory must necessarily be part of the field of relations constituted by the social forces that are implicit in the dialectic between structure and superstructure.

This essay considers the tragic elements present in Gramsci's prison writings, including both the Prison Notebooks and the Prison Letters. It highlights specific moments in both the notebooks and the letters in which this tragic element presents itself. These include the interpretation of the often cited motto of 'pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will' present in the notebooks, of the für ewig character of the notebooks as expressed in an important prison letter, and of other important passages. Also, it shows how the tragic element expresses at the same time the fusion of Gramsci's personal tragedy with the political tragedy of the Left in general. Finally, the essay treats on how this tragic element transcends itself in the claim for the fertilizing of the social terrain for a better future.
