Mayo, Peter,
Hegemony, Migration and Misplaced Alliances: Lessons from Gramsci, in García Agustín, Óscar, Solidarity without borders; London: Pluto Press, 2016, pp. 135 - 149
This article provides an account of Antonio Gramsci’s impact on the area of critical pedagogy. It indicates the Gramscian influence on the thinking of major exponents of the field. It foregrounds Gramsci’s ideas and then indicates how they have been taken up by a selection of critical pedagogy exponents who were chosen on the strength of their identification and engagement with Gramsci’s ideas, some of them even having written entire essays on Gramsci. The article concludes with a discussion concerning an aspect of Gramsci’s concerns, the question of powerful knowledge, which, in the present author’s view, provides a formidable challenge to critical pedagogues.

Starting from this understanding, the book goes on to compare Gramsci's theories with those of later thinkers in the development of a critical pedagogy that can confront neoliberalism in all its forms., table_contents=, titolo_collana=Routledge studies in education and neoliberalism/8, collocazione=FIG: G. 846, soggettivoc=[Egemonia, Educazione Per Adulti], subjectvoc=[Hegemony, Education, Adult], note_riservate=ISBN - 9780415812276, source=, recordInfo=, identifier=IT-GRAMSCI-BIB00001-0020401, recordOrigin=, condizioni_accesso=public, dateIssued=20150101-20151231}]
This paper deals with aspects of Antonio Gramsci’s thinking on education and related cultural work, highlighting issues such as those of effective curricula, different forms of educators/intellectuals, work-oriented education and popular education, which have resonance with contemporary debates in the field. Gramsci’s ideas provide insights for an effective contemporary socialist pedagogical politics that are based on the principle of critical access to ‘powerful knowledge’ and experiences that promote critical thinking, in formal educational institutions and other learning settings.

One of the greatest myths being propagated in this contemporary neoliberal scenario is that the nation state is no longer the main force in this period characterized by the intensification of globalization. Deregulation was brought in by governments to expedite the process where various forms of provision, private and formerly public, were left to the market. And yet the credit crunch starkly laid bare the folly of this conviction as new forms of regulation are being put in place with the state, the national state, intervening to bail out banks and other institutions in this situation. I consider this an opportune moment to look at the function of the state and assess its role within the contemporary scenario of 'hegemonic globalization', to adopt the term used by the Portuguese sociologist, Boaventura de Sousa Santos (de Sousa Santos in Dale and Robertson, 2004: 151), and its underlying ideology, neoliberalism. I will look at different theoretical insights and then end this excursus with a discussion of Gramsci's conceptualization of the state and its implications for present day politics.
