collects essays written and published between 1975 and 1981. Los usos de Gramsci is contextualized in
relation to the historical-political moment (the coup d'etat in Chile and then in Argentina), the cultural
climate (the national and international Marxist debate) and the trajectory of the author. The central
thesis is that this book represents a momentary equilibrium between the earlier Leninist approach
and the later approach, linked to liberal-democratic and socialist thought. In the 1981 book, Gramsci's
original reading is happily combined with an extraordinary ability to innovate Marxism theoretically in

Special issue of Rethinking Marxism on "Marxism And Spirituality"
The purpose of this essay is to reconstruct the relationship between subalterns, religion, and philosophy in Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks. With the birth of mass societythat is, with the entry onto the political scene of the popular masses, and above all of the peasantrypolitics entered directly into relation with irrational passions bound up with the religious mentality, and hegemony was constructed not thanks to the institution of a "filter" for the passions (as was the parliament of "notables") but through the mastering of those "passions" using forms of Caesarist and charismatic democracy. In Gramsci's view, the political action of the subaltern classes had to confront this new form of hegemony by recognizing the value of the profound content of religious ideas (which always indicate the need for a unification of theory and practice) and by working on a "translation" of those ideas into the forms of self-organization and self-emancipation.
My contribution is divided into four sections. The first is devoted to an illustration of what I shall call "post-Jacobin" hegemony in the Prison Notebooks. The starting point is, therefore, the attempt to demonstrate the presence in the Notebooks, of not one but two notions of hegemony. The first of these - the "Jacobin" one - corresponds to the passage from the economic-corporative to the hegemonic and to the primacy of "culture". The second, belonging to the mass and standardized society of the 1920s and 1930s, appears as an indissoluble intertwining of progressive and regressive aspects, summarized in the oxymoron "passive revolution". The second section focuses on this new situation, characterized by a sort of "double" or reciprocal siege - that of the masses besieging the State and vice versa - and hence by a polarity constituted by bureaucratization and democratization, as two aspects which are both present in the "capillary" and "diffused" hegemony at work in the societies that emerged from World War I. The third section concentrates on the ideological conditions in which the new hegemonic struggle takes place. In them, religion, in as much as it is a form of massive contact between the rulers and the ruled, takes on a decisive role, both as a form of government and as a mode of resistance. Lastly, the fourth section, by focusing on Gramsci's reflections on the concept of "myth" as a grammar of mass politics, explores the eventual connections between myth and democracy, thereby connecting the arguments dealt with respectively in the second and third sections.

Aim of the present essay is to track different epochs of hegemony in the history of the modern State. In the first chapter, a very peculiar although rarely studied aspect of Gramsci's method is retrieved, i.e. the semantic expansion of all the terms denoting functions involved in the concrete working of hegemony. It will be shown that this expansion is necessary to understand the role played by the public « organisational » and « connective » functions taking place within the private sphere of the « civil society ». The second chapter introduces two (not entirely distinguishable) main phases of hegemony, represented, respectively, by the predominance of « mobilisation » and of « control ». The consequence of the trend from the first to the second phase is the gradual weakening of the separation between « public » and « private ». With regard to the government of the subaltern classes, this trend means that « control » becomes more important in relation to « mobilisation », and bourgeois power is pushed towards the experimentation of new forms of proximity - not merely repressive but ideological - to the masses of the subalterns.

This issue of «Laboratoire italien» reports on the current state of the research on Gramsci in Italy. From the point of view of their subject matter, the contributions collected in this issue can be divided into two main areas, which ultimately feed on each other: the editions, on the one hand, and on the other, the critical studies. The first section hosts contributions on the new editions, framed in the project - started in 1990 and still in progress - of the the Edizione nazionale degli scritti di Antonio Gramsci. In particular, it gathers essays on the new editions of the Prison Notebooks, the Writings 1910-1926 and the Correspondence. These articles give an account of the innovations - both in the method and content - that these new editions have produced. The section opens with an extensive essay by Gianni Francioni who studies the way Gramsci worked through the manuscript of the Notebooks, revealing its structure and diachronic features in the light of the latest philological findings. The second section collects studies on certain issues and concepts previously neglected, and that in the last two decades are emerging as crucial: pragmatism, linguistics, the interpretation of fascism, of corporatism and post-liberal societies, the category of "translatability", the relationship with Vico's philosophy. The issue is concluded (third section) by Giuseppe Vacca with a comprehensive overview of the most significant interpretations of Gramsci in Italy in recent years.

The present contribution brings into focus the nexus between self-censorship and political analysis of the world as it was at the time of the Prison Notebooks. After a brief presentation of the way in which self-censorship has been evaluated and analysed in the studies and editions of Gramsci, we attempt to reconstruct a number of segments of the Notebooks, in which Gramsci carries out critical analyses of the world of the time in connection with a political project of a thoroughgoing redefinition of the PCI's political strategy. The point to which we direct most attention is that group of processes that, briefly and somewhat conventionally Gramsci defines as "Americanism and Fordism". We demonstrate the nexus between this group of phenomena and his investigation of the crisis and the transformation of parliamentarism, that is to say of the emergence of a "corporative" society, even outside fascist Italy, and of the appearance of a new form of politics, in which the masses are completely organized and actively present within the organizations created by the State in order to control them.
