The reading that Francesco De Sanctis led in the later half of XIXth century over Machiavelli's and Guicciardini's texts provoked a rich return to the main questions of this early‐modern political thought. It made possible to assent the basis for the development of a realist political thought, that would have its aim in the actual investigation of the efettuale reality of things. Antonio Gramsci, himself, have read De Sanctis in this key, specially as a popular realist. This article aims exactly to grasp the conections around the popular realism they share.
