Levy, Carl Gramsci's cultural and political sources: anarchism in the prison writings

Antonio Gramsci engaged in a dialogue with the anarchist, syndicalist and libertarian traditions throughout his life. This article will focus on the Prison Notebooks and the Letters from Prison and demonstrate that although he subsumed the Italian movements and their subcultures under the syndrome of subversivism (sovversivismo), libertarian themes from Sorel and Proudhon, popular education and Rousseau, and the legacy of the Factory Council movement (1919-20) were key to the shaping of such concepts as hegemony, Gramsci's take on ideology or the role of pedagogy and language in politics.
