Ram, Kalpana Rationalism, Cultural Nationalism and the Reform of Body Politics: Minority Intellectuals of the Tamil Catholic Community

«Examines the pivotal role of traditional intellectuals in changing the social life & aspirations of the local villagers of rural Tamil Nadu, India. Focusing specifically on tensions within the reformist discourses of the Roman Catholic clergy, the centrality of these intellectuals-particularly Fr. John Prakash & Fr. Alphonse - to the construction & articulation of postcolonial discourses of modernization & social reform is identified. Antonio Gramsci's ideas about the relationship between traditional & state intellectuals serve as a starting point not only for the application of his schema in postcolonial India, but for a critical reevaluation of his categories at a more general level as well» (M.M.).
