    Ph.D. Dissertation.
«This study addresses the role of religion in the political life of Brazil and Poland. Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony and counter hegemony provides the framework for analysis. Gramsci argued that the dominant classes in society rule not only by coercion but by formulating an ideological hegemony at all levels of society.... The study draws on Gramsci's concept of organic intellectuals who have the responsibility to assist the subordinate classes in demystifying the power relations that keep these classes from understanding their own subordination and their interests. The intellectuals help develop the "embryonic consciousness" into a counter hegemonic ideology that forms a new vision of social, economic and cultural life».
